Mixing board advice wanted...

Hey guys (and girls?) - Just got my voyager yesterday, and looking to expand my studio to incorporate the new instrument. WE have previously only operated with a soundcard and DAW's, and we will still be using Ableton to sequence and produce tracks.

HOWEVER, we do not have a mixer in the studio right now, and with the Voyager, 2 mics, a guitar, and a instrument mic (trumpets/trombones), it's time for a mixing board. We won't be playing more than 2 instruments at once (including mics) - so what do you guys suggest as far as the type of mixer/channels?

I was thinking of a Mackie Onyx 1220 or 820, depending on if I need 8 or 12 channels. We have to get the firewire connect, and it seems that the 820 is more geared towards working with DAW's. However, if you guys have any suggestions, tips or advice, I will take it.

Buy as many channels as you can afford. I find 16 limiting at times. Some speakers I mic I use 4 at a time. (Leslies) It's nice to be all cabled up and not plugging and replugging all the time.
It's nice if the buss matrix architecture matches your recording device, too. Keep an eye out for used, but inspect it carefully. Lot's of money can be saved that way.

Why do you need a mixer if you only need to record two sources at once? You just need an interface with at least 2 preamps and a di. Check out Presonus, motu, apogee, rme for various products.

You can't go wrong with a mixer. Its one of the best investments ive bought so far.

Look at the peavey 10, 14, or 20 USB. THe peavey 14 usb is rackmountable and is a great board.

Focusrite Pro 40 is what I use. It's quite good.

Using a Yamaha 01V for years now and still think this is one of the best mixerboards i invested in.
