Murf tone
Murf tone
The new Midi Murf is incredibly GASING me from some weeks, I know its incredible features and unlimited possibilities, but I still have this "timbric" doubt.
There are few guitar demo online but its tone seems always pretty cold and metallic compared to other classic filters (more "wah-oriented").
Maybe my ear it's too accustomed to traditional sample/hold filters example like these:
Subdecay Prometheus, at 1:28 classic Zappa "Ship Ahoy" style:

Zvex Ooh Wah

I went through that timbric doubt process on each and every one of my 'foogers.
After going years of reading about them and then eventually trying them a little at
NAMM shows, I continued to not buy them. I tend to prefer elegant, complex sounds
over quirky sounds, and limited time spent with 'foogers tends to show you more of
their quirkier sides.
I finally caved and bought the MIDI MuRF because of the additional features. I took it
straight to rehearsal and tried to show it off to my bandmates where it once again
seemed more like of a quirky novelty sound and less of a source of timbral ecstasy. I
really had my doubts.
Then, each time I sat and carefully tweaked the knobs and listened to the relationships
between them I found more beauty. Now, I simply wouldn't sell it.
To varying degrees I went through this with each and every 'fooger. I now own them all
except for the delay; but I think about it a lot...
I even took a some 'foogers and my Etherwave Plus out on one of my Floyd shows this
weekend and most of the people who waited around to talk to me after the show only
wanted to know about my Moog stuff. Not a single question about my awesomely-
programmed Kurzweil

Last weekend I picked up a Murf along with 5 other Foogers. I figured on selling some of the duplicates and the Murf as I didn't think I could find a use for it.
After a few days, there is no way I'd sell the Murf now. I just got finished spending an hour with it just feeding a noise signal into it. Adding a bit of LFO to the ENV in and it is a very cool rhythm device very reminicent of Synergy and TD. I'm in love!
Like everything, when you first get it you turn it all the way up and listen to the bleeps and bloops. Then you learn to manipulate the controls and hear the subtle changes. I wish now I could have got a MIDI Murf but the standard one offers a very large pallete of sound. (Like the drawbars on a Hammond.)
Now, I've just got to figure what else I want to sell out of the batch. I don't have room for 11 Foogers. It's a toss between the spare delay or the spare Phaser.

Man the sad part is that Ive got some cash in my pocket and trying not to go out and purchase all the remaining foogers I don't have. Im trying to hold out for other gear, but this thread isn't helping me much.

I think I hear the mothership coming.

Thanks Dan, I perfectly understand you. Then, each time I sat and carefully tweaked the knobs and listened to the relationships

I went to a similar process with my MF-102.
After the first "honeymoon" period I start to think " well, at the end it's only like a gigantic tremolo, I will never use that detuned ring modulator".
Then I begin to slowly understand the dynamic and expressive potentiality (with exp. pedal etc.) and the beauty of this warm analog sound.
As you wrote, I went to dozen of different fantastic pedals in the last year, but the mf-102 was the most desired and unique by other guitarists that watched me".
I play guitar and occasionally bass on a small project so the Midi Murf will fit perfectly. For "whackiness" filtering like "Ship Ahoy" I could always turn my wah befor the murf

Remember EricK...AFTER the Taurus pedals arrive, THEN you can get a MIDI MuRF. I'm in the same boat, so I feel ya on that one...except I'm a little worse off, because at the same time I owe $2200 to the credit card company, I'm trying to buy a house.EricK wrote:Man the sad part is that Ive got some cash in my pocket and trying not to go out and purchase all the remaining foogers I don't have.
