Beginning Theremin

Hi all,

I just ordered an Etherwave. I've been intrigued by Theremins since I first saw one used at a concert a few years ago. However, it wasn't until recently that I was able to find an excuse to buy one.

Anyway, while I wait for my wonderful new instrument to arrive, I wanted to see if more experienced players had any tips for someone just starting out.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Get the DVD by Peter Pringle called "How to Play the Theremin."

I found the old training DVD from Moog the most useful so far, don't have Peter's yet.
While I was waiting (and waiting...) for my Theremin I watched those tapes and tried to mimic Lydia Kavena and Clara Rockmore.

Now that I have my Theremin I can't stop playing it though I'm still terribly out of tune.

I start out with some basic intervals and scales using a drone box ( an electronic Shruti box from India), and an electronic tuner to help with intonation;
then I play along with the Pachelbel Cannon in D bass line which is a solid 4 min work out of the basic D major progression.

Then for the "treat" part of practice I play along with other music like the ubiquitous "The Swan", the theme from "The Ten Commandments", and other adagio tunes I know by heart.

It's a heck of a lot of fun to play!

Well it's been a little while now and I'm better in tune. I got my EWPro the volume and pitch preview modifications and was very happy with the results. A tiny adjustment to the *super* sensitive screw on the side has the volume field right were I want it.
After working with all the DVDs I've found the Clara Rockmore to be the most helpful. Though it is tough to figure out all the details of her technique from that one tape without any detailed explanation; it is the one I keep going back to for refreshers.
Am finally feeling pretty musically confident on the EWPro and really love it as an instrument, glad I waited for it. As they say "buy the best and you'll seldom be disappointed."
