Has anyone transported their LP on a plane in the Flight Case?

Re: LP Flight Case
This is a BAD time to try and take instruments on airplanes. Between mad bombers, serious cutbacks at airlines (ie. they charge for bags checked now so every single passenger tries to bring EVERYTHING on and crams them into overhead) you're really relegated to knowing that it's going beneath.ldtregent wrote:Has anyone transported their LP on a plane in the Flight Case?
I've heard good things about the hard case (the one Moog sells) but have no experience with it. I'd be more concerned with it walking away than breaking.
I used a soft keyboard case (universal) to take mine from New Jersey to Asheville when I brought it in for service and was lucky enough to have frequent flier status (so was first on the plane) and a flight that wasn't that full.
I've also taken my Bass on as carryon (this is a Steinberger so very small case) and they've snatched it from me at the door of the plane, insisting that they check it. They beat the hell out of the case meaning that they banged it up something fierce thus ripping the vinyl in about 15 spots between the two legs of the trip. The hardcase will protect itself against this.
Not her to scare you but wanted to share these two experiences... I'll be taking a bus like John Madden or Amtrak soon just so I can keep my precious instruments in tact!

I've taken my Little Phatty on lots of flights. I even took it from New Zealand to the US, and then to Europe. Also lots of internal flights in New Zealand and Australia. I bought a cheap suitcase and put a lot of foam in it, and I transport it in that. It works really well, my LP is still as shiny as ever.
I have a friend who warned me off the Moog flight case. His band toured with two LPs, so they had two of the Moog flight cases. The wheels fell off on both of them, and they don't hold the LP is place inside properly, so their phatties managed to loose a couple of knobs. They quickly replaced them with custom flight cases that were way stronger.
So I just thought I'd post that to give you a different perspective. I've seen people throw my phatty from the plane to the runway and it's been fine. It cost me about 40 USD to put it together. Always an option

Are Moog ATA cases catagory 1, 2, or 3?
Catagory 1: A case which is built to withstand 100 airline trips without falling apart.
Catagory 2: A case which is built to withstand 10 trips.
Catagory 3: A case which is built to withstand 1 trip.
(BTW, given these criteria, a cardboard box can be a Catagory 3 ATA case!)
Edit: The ATA Spec 300 has three catagories, not classes. I replaced "class" with "catagory" above, so there's no confusion.

To be fair, I'm sure they've had an unusually bad experience with the cases, because I don't see many people complaining about the Moog cases on the forums. Also, they used them very heavily, I think almost full time touring for a year and a half before they totally fell apart.
I haven't bought the Moog case because it's a bit too expensive for me. I can make a good quality one myself for a tiny fraction of that price. I will definitely buy the Moog one before they stop making them though. I want the full package!

Re: LP Flight Case
The Moog cases are a joke. I have one and have only taken it on 2 flights but the handle on top has broken (not from the flights, just from day to day normal use).
I'm about to be touring and flying with it a lot and I don't trust the Moog case at all. I'm going to have to get a custom one made. Total waste of money.
So does anyone have any recommendations for flight case companies in Australia? Or have discovered that they fit in flight cases that were designed for other things by any chance?

Re: LP Flight Case
there should be a spacecase or a pelican that will fit a LP
Re: LP Flight Case
The Moog case is a ROAD case, just for clarification.
Mine has survived UPS, and moving from one town to the other. It looks better than my Taurus road case, which UPS beat to hell, but hey, it still works, so no complaints.

Minitaur, CP-251, EHX #1 Echo, EHX Space Drums/Crash Pads, QSC GX-3, Pyramid stereo power amp, Miracle Pianos, Walking Stick ribbon controller, Synthutron.com, 1983 Hammond organ, dot com modular.
Re: LP Flight Case
You must understand the confusion though based on the Moog Music description:
"Protect your investment when you're on the road. The LP Molded case is designed to meet ATA specifications."

Re: LP Flight Case
im thinking of purchasing the moog case but i am wonder if anyone else has experienced knob breakage or anything else weird like one of earlier posters mentioned? its almost 300 bucks and thats alot of money for something that could damage my synth. i bought the moog gig bag and the zipper broke within 3 days. i hope the ata case isnt as cheesy.
