MF-101 or MF-107/simple rack ideas/carrier out question

Post by edpoulsen » Tue Oct 13, 2009 4:36 pm

I have the MuRF and the Ring Mod (I also have a bass MuRF for sale on ebay for $280 if anyone is interested (seller name edpoulsen919)), I'm not sure what to purchase next, either the MF-101 or the MF-107. While the 101 seems to be a cornerstone in every fooger collection, the 107 sounds really cool. After I purchase one of the two effects, would it be worth it at that point to buy a CP-251? Or should I go ahead and add which ever other pedal I didn't initially get, and THEN go for the CP-251?

Any simple rack ideas for holding all of these moogs while keeping it compact and "organized"?

I have JUST been made aware of the carrier out jack on the back of my Ring Mod, and was running that into the audio in of my MuRF. Just to make sure I'm clear on whats going on the carrier out is using the LFO on the Ring Mod as a sound source and then running that sound through the MuRF, effectively turning the moogs into stand alone instruments, right? How would I utilize the carrier in jacks? I know it might seem like a dumb question but I'm really not rich enough to risk blowing some circuitry by sending signals to the wrong places. I've looked all this up in the manuals but it seems a bit vague and there appears to be a plethora of information in this forum. Thanks!!

The carrier in jack lets you modulate two signals with each other. This bypasses the internal carrier signal and gives you the sum and difference tones of the audio input and the carrier input signals.

The most simple thing to do is to use the same signal as the audio and carrier signals. You'll get the sum of the signal with itself (which is an octave above the original signal) and the difference (which cancels out). The end result is an analog octave-up signal.

Obviously, you can use two very different signals. A synth and a drum machine, for example.

The sky is the limit.

carrier out is using the carrier as a sound source, not the LFO. The carrier freq is controlled by the knob on the lower right.

Normally I would recommend the filter, but if already have any other nice filters, then I'd go straight to the Freqbox and then a controller; modulating the Wave input between a square and pulse has a great flangey/phasey sound, as well as a nice vibrato when modulating the Freq input. A lowpass filter after the Freqbox will mask any distortion on attack, and envelopes respond so well to its waveforms.. such a fun pedal to play!

Regarding the Carrier in of the Ringmod: With an MP201 CV out into the Ringmods Carrier in and some audio through the audio input, you can use it as a volume pedal or manual tremolo when used in Expression mode: limit the sweep about 50% for full amplitude at toe down; manual trem at full 5v, full volume occurs at the halfway point and back to no audio at toe down. I assume you could do this with a CP-251, as well as different LFO's into the Carrier in for different tremolo patterns...

A cp251 will definately make you see our foogers in new ways, ESPECIALLY if you have more than 1.

I have a lot of foogers and the CP-251. I use the CP-251 almost every time I use one of the pedals. It greatly expands what you can do with your foogers so I would highly recomend it.

eggcellent, great info once again. Thanks a ton, I think next I'll go with a freqbox, then LPF, then CP-251.

One more question to see if I have an understanding of how some of this works. Say I'm finger picking a chord, and when I pick the highest notes I want the oscillator to fire off a high pitch, quick decay frequency. I know that Moog doesn't offer a high pass filter, but suppose they did, would I split the signal, leave the clean signal alone, and treat the other split signal through a high pass filter which, when the higher notes were picked, would trigger an oscillator to fire off that high pitched quick decay frequency (for it to decay quickly I guess I'd need to run it through an EG?) Does that make any sense? I think I need to read more books haha. Thanks for all the info thus far. This stuff is insane, the potential is endless.
