105, 105B, 105M...which 2 make the best overall combination?

Post by EricK » Wed Sep 30, 2009 1:12 am

Okay, so before the Midi version, it was obvious that I needed both versions. Now the Midi Murf contains both versions.

1. I want the original as Bob designed it, so Id probably go with the 105, as it was truly his last full creation.

my question is.......

Does the Midi Murf contain both 105 and 105B filter banks, or does it also contain both sets of patterns, or does that really matter since you can create your own patterns?

Basically, you buy one, you miss out on the others patterns, or you get the midi murf and one pro outweighs one con.

What are your suggestions?

Thanks,
Eric

the editor and the midi makes it twice or three time more powerfull, and both together (bass and regular), a lot more feature (lfo...)

Eric, I have both early models and am considering selling one or both to buy the MIDI version.

The sounds are drastically different. The 105 is 8 BP filters, so it really doesn't let any bass through. Of course enter the 105B which has an LPF (at 110Hz I think), so on full mix, where these pedals excel IMO, you do get bass coming through.

The patterns on the 105B are a lot more "groove" oriented also, whereas the 105's are more "soundscapey", e.g. staircase etc. There is some crossover between the units too.

One thing to note is the original MuRFs have bypass issues, whereby if they are not buffered by another pedal they can clunk when the effect is switched in and out. Presumably this is fixed in the updated version.

So, may I ask, why two? Stereo processing? If I was buying two MuRFs again I'd go for 2x105Ms. MIDI Sync, pattern editor and a switch to go between Bass/Bass, Mids/Bass and Mids/Mids instantly.

If you're after the more "nostalgic" choice, I'd say that would depend on the type of use you have intended: rhythmic(ons ;)) bass or ambient treble.

From the KnobTweak FAQ Database regarding duplicate patterns in the original MuRF and Bass MuRF :

Well I believe(d) that 2 are in order because they made 2 different versions. I wanted one because I am a bass player and awaiting the taurus pedals. I want to have that effect AND be able to get "Moog Percussion" without sacrificing a whole synth to do so (or a murf).

I feel that with the LFP, Phaser, and Murf, these make for an increadible filter bank. So I want to be able to process sounds AND then run some noise through them with snappy envelopes so that I can get percussion on some of my all Moog tracks.

I guess Ill read the users guide lol.

Unless someone just wants to tell me if you get both sets of patterns.

Interesting about the bypass issue. I wasn't aware of that.

Thanks,
Eric

If you are getting 2 for sure, I would say you should buy 2 Midi MuRF's.

There is no advantage (I can think of) to buying the older ones at all. The Midi ones can do anything the old ones can do and a ton more if you can use the editor as well as create/sequence midi notes and cc's.

I owned a Bass MuRF and used it to it's fullest potential and would never buy it again now that the midi version is around. Even though I have only just begun to try out all of the new modes, control options and sonic possibilities. The midi MuRF is exponentially better at the least.
