Voyager owners who also have a LP

Post by earsmack » Sat Jan 12, 2008 6:00 pm

Back in the day when the LP's were only pre-order, I pre-ordered one. But then, I decided to cancel my order and buy a Voyager Performer Edition instead. I couldn't be happier with my purchase - best synth I've ever owned IMO.

However, lately I've seen alot of Voyager owners who also have an LP. I'm considering buying one because I think for jamming away from the studio, etc. it would just be easier to grab an LP than unwire the Voyager. The Voyager and my MF's are great in the studio but I would never want to take them out!

So...for those folks who own both...any regrets? I know the sounds are pretty similar but are there enough differences and nuances to make the LP a worthwhile instrument to own as well? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have both, and a Model D but that’s another thread :) . The LP works very well on its own or in conjunction with the Voyager. Portability wise the LP is great, I use on every Sunday to do leads, monophonic pads or bass lines on the “slower” for the Contemporary service at Church. Before I had the LP I was taking a Voyager each week, with the LP I lost 25 or so pounds in one week . The two sound very similar, but also have their own character, warm but a slightly different shade of warm :) . The LP is very easy to tweak during a live performance, press the button of what you want to adjust then turn the knob. Sure the Voyager has a lot more dedicated knobs meaning fewer buttons pushes, which is fine I love having all the knobs, but with the LP it’s really not that bad having only four knobs and several buttons to push once you spend some time with it it’s not bad at all :) , I am able to tweak and adjust patches just fine.

MIDI it with the Voyager and you gain two more OSC’s, run it through the Filter in on the Voyager, run it through some MoogerFoogers, all kinds of possibilities.

I love using both, the LP is a fun great sounding synth. If you’re looking to add another mono synth, it’s worth a look at, if you want the Moog sound for gigs and don’t want to lug the Voyager around it’s worth going on the “Moog Diet” and get an LP :) .

I bought the Little Phatty about a year ago and i just got my select series voyager 3 weeks ago!
They are both fantastic synths.
I find that they do have a different sound. My LP is a tribute so i am not sure whether that is part of it, but i find that my LP isnt as bright as the voyager. Especially with the sawtooth waves, i cant get that really bright buzzy sound on my LP.

Saying this, i find that the LP is great for doing softer sounds. I can more easily get a soft squarewave sound on the LP that isnt as in your face as the voyagers. The overdrive on the LP is also fantastic.

They are both really fantastic synths. I would also recommend looking at the LP if ur wanting another analog mono synth.

Have a play at a store and see wht u think of it

I've kicked around the idea in my head to get an LP for taking 'out', and leaving my Signature edition at home (as it was hard enough to find this one!).

However, i think I'll just get an RME or plain Voyager instead. The plain Voyagers imho don't cost THAT much more used (and this one could be ugly) and I'd have less qualms about taking it onstage.

whatever differences there are in sound and tone would be lost on most audiences. freakin troglodytes.

I would have to say that the difference in the build quality between the two is obvious.

User friendliness wise the LP is very fast and easy to use in a live situation more so than the Voyager

Sound gets a bit more subjective but the Voyager sounds more refined to my ear.

The LP has the arp function which the Voyager does not so they can compliment each other there.

Have the two and you are starting to talk polyphony...

I sometimes find this a bit annoying. When I'm gigging with nothing but my Voyager, i have to be quiet very often. Pressing any key on the voyager always brings you to the front, which is not always perfect if there are other musicians as well :)

Can't you adjust the de-couple the master volume from the patch volume and have the patches come quieter? Just curious.
