MP-201 as a midi controller?

Post by pmasvidal » Thu Jul 09, 2009 2:54 pm

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum and as a guitar player, I am interested in swapping my current midi controller for the MP-201. The pedal does way more than I would ever need, but it would be perfect for me it could do this simple task. I appreciate anyone's input. Thanks in advance!

1) Does the unit provide 'bank' modes for custom midi mapping? I've looked at their manual and on the forums and see that it has a 'quad mode' but does that mode have user banks?

In other words, can you setup song 'templates' so that each of the four buttons has a different patch assigned to it for simple patch changes?

2) If it does in fact have this ability, is it easy to switch between 'banks or songs' during a live set (by foot, etc..) and how many 'banks' does the unit provide?

for ex:

song / bank 1 -
button 1: dist (ch 23 on rack unit)
button 2: clean (ch 15, etc..)
button 3: synth
button 4: solo

song / bank 2
button 1: synth
button 2: dirty
etc...

I would then have numerous other songs / banks with various other patch configurations.

*I noticed in another post Amos mentioned this firmware update: "option to send bank/patch change messages per channel one at a time in Quad
Mode (a Moog forum request!)"

Maybe this is what I'm asking about?

As you can see, I don't need it for any of the cv stuff at the moment, just as a simple midi controller (as a guitar player) for patch changes on a piece of rack gear (fractal audio guitar head) and for the expression pedal. I currently use a Ground Control but am looking to simplify my rig and minimize size due to only needing four patches per song.

I've read the manual and looked all over the forum but don't see anything about this. I hope it's just too obvious to mention.

Thanks again, Paul

Sorry to say....but everything can be found in the manual... :)

question 1 : from the manual....In a MP-201 Preset, each MP-201 Channel can be programmed to send a Program Change message on its assigned MIDI Channel when that Preset is selected. This means each Preset can send up to 4 Program Change messages on up to 4 MIDI Channels.

question 2 : Yes it is easy to switch between banks in Single channel mode by foot....wil be updated in the next firmware so you can do this also in quad mode by foot.

50 user banks are available....most are already presets...but can be overwritten.

If you need more info...please read the manual again...or try bothering me...

Thanks for the quick reply. This is great news. Looks like it will work for me. Will have to read the manual again more thoroughly although I would be dependent on the quad bank mode option.

Do you know when the next firmware update will be?

Hi,

I received my mp201.

Trying to figure out how to turn program change messages on for all 4 channels and setup a basic 'bank' with the first user preset.

Could you help explain the basic steps to a midi dummy like myself, as to how I would setup the unit?

My previous setup was using midi channel 2 for everything and then I mapped the program changes within the pedal. Do you know if I would I need to 'map' the program changes in my Fractal Audio Axe-Fx? (this is the guitar head I will be controlling), or can I program from the MP?

Is there a way to have the unit default to quad mode each time it's powered up?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you'd prefer to do this on skype or sms that would be fine with me.

Thanks, Paul

I've discovered the unit can't send program change messages in quad mode yet. Need this 'momentary mode' feature that should be in the next firmware. I'll hang loose until it's here!
