CP-251 Power Requirements - Help Required.

Post by Simon Birds » Tue Oct 05, 2004 8:52 pm

Hi all,

I hope someone might be able to help me here as I don't know much about this topic. I live in Australia and am considering the purchase of a CP-251 from the USA. Australia uses 240v power whereas the US uses 110v. I know that it is possible to purchase a 220v power supply for use with the CP251 but I was wondering whether the actual CP-251's are different depending on their intended market ? For example I know some synths have a switch on the back allowing the user to select between different voltages. Can I just use a local 9v 500ma power supply to drive the CP251 or will it explode ?

Any help or comments appreciated.

Cheers

Simon

Quote from the Moog Music CP251 webpage:
Power supply is included: order 110v for use in US or Canada or 220v for use in Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia.

I had a similar problem recently when I purchased a MuRF directly from Moog and had it shipped to the UK . . Somehow I was under the illusion that the PSU came with it . . and in fact when you order from the moog site you have to select either a 110v or 220v model and there's no listing that you have to order seperatly.

So my MuRF arrived without a PSU and low and behold it uses a different amp rating then the standard moogerfooger PSU . . plugging in the MuRF to one of my other MF pedals PSU didn't have enough amps to power the unit.

What you have to do is buy a generic 9v PSU with enough current to power the CP-251 . . it can supply more amps as the 251 will just draw what it needs but if it's underpowered then she won't light up. Also positive is centre pin . . get one of those PSu's where you can rotate the plug to change the poles.

For example, I think the MF pedals use 200ma PSU's but the MuRF requires 300ma.

If you have it plugged in to your Voyager through the VX-351 then you don't need any power adapters as the Voyager powers it all down the cable.

I have just re-read what you are saying . . that the PSU is supplied as part of the unit/cost . . . then I have been double short changed as neither my 251 or my MuRF were supplied with PSU's. . . I'm sending an email to steve right now!

If you have other PSU's for other pedals so long as the amp rating is higher then the MF pedal requires, the voltage is 9 volts and the polarity is correct (+ center pin) then you are OK.

If you plug in an AC walwart . . and you do get them, then you'll fry your MF pedal, unfortunatly most of them are unlabeled so look for the little DC sign which looks like 2 horizontal lines with the bottom one dashed . . . the AC logo is just a single wavey line.

Thanks to Steve, I received in the post yesterday 2 PSU's for my MuRF and 251 which were not supplied when I originally ordered . . unfortunatley they came with euro 2 pin connections but better then nothing! (I can jam them into our 3 pin UK socket - well safe!!).
