Hello all. Just came across this board and it looks like an awesome resource.
Just got a Voyager Old School White Wash. Been spending the past week playing around and discovering it's sounds. A little surprised at how long it's been taking me to wrap my head around it. Really impressed with the sound quality and build quality. I've owned a Source in the past but didn't hold onto it long because I didn't like it's controls. Maybe a rash decision... Also have a partially functioning MG-1 which I've used here and there for some fx sounds.
The main synth I've used for the past few yearshas been a Doepfer A-100 Modular. It's served me well but had plenty of things that have irked me. I started out with an old Heathkit square wave generator and an old Space Echo and worked my way up. Most people classify my music as Noise, Drone, Underground, whatever.. Not really a musician, so I've not had much use for a keyboard but recently my stuff has become more "musical" and with the help of my label I was able to get the Voyager. A long desired item finally able to grip one. Really happy with the sound quality but I'm having problems integrating into my sound. Mostly keyboard-y sounds and I want wild and noisey sounds as well as musical ones. In this regard I suppose I need to invest in one of the Control Processors. If I had to get one, should I get the VX-351 or the CP 251? How different are they?
Also Looking at the MFB step 64 for a sequencer. I have a Tenori-on going into a cv to midi box controlling the A-100. Works ok but The tenori-on has way more than I need and I'm thinking about selling it for a control processor and MFB step 64. Any experiences to be shared?

You might want to get the vx351 to interface with that Modular. But the cp251 will do things for both. Really, the Vx351 will let you control the Doepfer with the Voyager's keyboard. You might want to go that route.

Welcome indeed! Of course, as far as 351 or CP-251, you can never have enough of either. If I were you, I'd get both. Since you already have an A-100 and are seeking just one or the other, I'd have to agree with EricK. Go for the 351.

Welcome to the forum. I, like you, am not a "musician". I'm a technologist that has been playing with this stuff for decades. I'm finally getting around to putting it on tape. (That's right, tape.) I love analog!
With a little experimenting, you will find you are able to get the bleeps ,boops and skroinks out of your OS. But the added bonus is the ability to get wonderfully animated melodic sounds, also.

Hello friend, and welcome.

You def need a vx-351 and some sort of cv to midi thing, then you can sequence your os with the tenori on. You should do it.

I just started using a tenori-on as well. Good stuff. If you use software, you may want to eventually look into sampling some of your moog sounds and loading them into tenori on via the card reader. I'm gonna dive into that this next week on my time off, I'll let you know how it goes. It should be dope.

You can load 16 sounds on each "samplings" patch of the tenori on, and there are 3 samplings patches that can be stored on a card. If you're into noise stuff, that is pretty bad arse. That's either 3 patches spread out over 16 notes, or 48 moog noise samples that can be assigned to the tenori on.

i have an old school and a step64. they are a good match. with the step64 in mode 1, you can create a 16-step sequence to control CV pitch, CV gate, and 3 additional CV parameters on your OS back panel. with midi input into the step64, you can change sequence keys live, or you can organize 118 different sequences into a 128 sequence song...and the step64 stores 16 songs. there are 5 other modes....64 step, 32 step, 4x16 step, 2x16 step....the more available steps in a sequence, though, the fewer CV parameters available to control.

i'm lately fooling around with my step64, creating 4x simultaneous 16 step sequences, controlling my OS and 3 patches on my dotcom modular all at once....makes my head hurt. and my wife thinks i'm nuts.

I'm looking at a pair of Voice of Saturn sequencer kits. They seem about as good a price as anything I've found.

A pair! Could you wire them together to get a 20 step sequencer?

If so, I may look into that, as well! I need to stop by the Salvation Army to find a ten channel UHF/VHF police scanner. I already have one, but will need another for such a project. I figure that's the best housing for the VoS, as the LED's and switches are already there.

Welcome to the forum. Voyager old school is perfection as far as keyboard synthesizers go if you ask me. Its a shame they are being discontinued. And the white wash is just stunning, kinda spacey looking.

But if I were you I would probably go for the vx over the cp. Im sure with your modular you have at least some of the cp functions, the vx is essential for any voyager I think.

Looks like you can chain them together in several ways.
Reset in of unit A to last channel of unit B
Reset in of unit B to last channel of unit A
Will cause each one to fire the other in sequence.
Or let both run in unison and use one as 10 steps of CV to pitch (or whatever)and the other to 10 steps of CV to filter (or whatever)
The boards are cheap and the components aren't anything difficult to come up with. I've got most of the parts laying around right now.
I plan to use linear sliders in 2 banks of 10 and adding switches to hard patch some of the I/O. I will also use 1/4" jacks for compatability with my Foogers. I'm looking at the schematics to figure out how to use only one clock (555) so they run at the same speed.

Figure less than $250 to build and rack case it. (I've got several spare 3U and 5U housings) Holes and slots aren't a problem.

Yeah, 1/4" jacks are a must. I buy them whenever I can, as I do LOTS of stuff with them. Let me know of any ways you find to wire two of them off one 555. I may just buy four kits and build two twenty-step sequencers. That way, I can build a custom steampunk case for them to match my DD-50!

i just listened to to some of your music. its very good. as El Effo said there are alot of great textures, its the type of music were you can discover little hidden treasures depending how you listen to it (headphones, pc, hi-fi etc) theres a great dreamy atmosphere to your stuff. i like it
