My new project Opus 3 restoration!

Post by electrical_engineer_gEEk » Mon Jul 19, 2004 6:07 pm

So I finally got my broken Opus 3 in the mail today....

Seller said it didn't respond when the power switch was activated....
My hope was that the fuse was blown ...but unfortunatley it wasn't the case....

Things got worse when I opened the case to find rust......lots of it....
then the dreaded black foam .......boy is that stuff messy & evil....

hmmm.....what was this horrible stench eminating from the inside....the goop?.....
no....
the rust?
no.....

wait, what are these little pellets everywhere....and the hair?.....
oh crap.... a mouse lived here at one point.....drats!

So, needless to say I've spent 8 hours today cleaning mouse poop, removing black goop & sanding rust......
greattt......what a project......

Oh yeah, one more thing..... If anyone else works on a project like this anytime soon make sure you DON'T USE ISOPROPEL ALCOHOL ON THE CASE.....I've pretty much ruined mine today cuz someone on the internet mentioned that it works well at removing that black goop (I know I prolly should have listened to his "diluted" tip but I'm so impatient).

ps. does anyone have any good tips for pinpointing a non-working Opus 3?
my plan of attack is to start at the transformer and work in.....
Thanks!

MANUAL INFO

Post by electrical_engineer_gEEk » Thu Aug 05, 2004 7:50 pm

I got my OPUS 3 manual (service & operation) in the mail today.....

very disappointed, i'd like to know if anyone else has a copy so i can double check before i accuse the seller of shorting me.....

So does the service manual not have any written information? My copy only has a parts list and schematics....no info on tuning, written operations of the inside..... basically its a bare bones service manual....

can anyone help me out and tell me if this is how the original is??.... this is why i hate buying photocopies...ya never know if they are shorting you!

thanks in advance fellow moog repairers..... :)

Nope.. you've not been short-changed. That's the only info supplied with the synth. What you need is the dealer's repair manual, not the owner's service manual, which is indeed a block diagram and a list of components and tolerances included with the operating manual as a bonus.

Much harder to find I'd have thought..........
