Envelope & Trigger Quirkiness

Post by MFenkner » Sun Jul 25, 2004 3:07 pm

I've noticed some quirkiness in the way the envelopes work, especially with multi-trigger switched on. In all the digital synths I've used, multi-trigger always restarts the envelope at the beginning when you hit a new note, but on the MMV it doesn't quite work like that. Depending on where you are in the envelope on the current note, if you hit a new note it might still continue in it's current stage of the envelope. For example, if you have a slow attack on the filter envelope with multi-trigger, if you hit another note before the attack is finished, the envelope will continue rather than retriggering; you have to wait until the envelope is finished before it will trigger again.

I haven't been able to tell under what conditions a note will retrigger or not. Sometimes, if you entirely release (ie. take you finger off) one note and hit another, the new note continues with the previous envelope rather than restarting a new envelope. It seems in some instances, you have to wait for the release to finish before it will retrigger.

If you have a AE model, try preset 35 “Slow Sweep Bass” and change it to multi-trigger mode. No matter what you do, the envelope won’t retrigger until it’s at least past the attack.

Also, another issue with the envelopes: even if the sustain is set to 10 on both envelopes, when you have the External/On switched on, the volume and filter gradually decays. I thought it should never decay with these settings.

Is this normal behavior or is it something with my MMV? Do you know the exact mechanics of when a note will retrigger the envelope?

Thanks!

Mark

It seems to have something to do with the release switch. If its on, i've noticed that releasing a key fully before pressing another one wont retrigger the envelopes.

I noticed this oddity myself, whilst playing this exact same sound. Having just had another go, I tested a theory that the Keyboard Mode might be playing a role in this, and set it to: Last Key. At first, I thought it made a difference, but having played some more, the envelope still doesn't completely re-trigger. Have a go yourself, and see what you think.

Boeing, having tried the Release switch idea, this doesn't provide a solution either, it simply cuts the note as soon as you release the key you're playing (in this instance) - the filter envelope still remains at the same point when you hit the next key.

There are also, definitely, other sounds that share this quirk, including some I have created myself. Could it be software problem that can/will be ironed out? Or are we all missing the point, here?

I received a response from MoogMusic:

"The envelope trigger that you experience is normal for the Voyager - it has to do with the design Bob used for these - you will notice that if the release is at zero the envelopes retrigger - I'll have to ask exactly why this is...Bob had something in mind designing it like this..."

I tested it and confirmed the response. If the Release is at zero, or a very low value, it will retrigger properly. It's kinda strange, but at least I know how it works now.

MFenkner, what address did you use to email Moog Music?

I'm really interested in asking about the filter glide problem and possible solutions, but any emails sent via this forum, or even manually have resulted in no response. Can you help?

Thanks.

I used their Contact webpage at:

http://www.moogmusic.com/contact.php

I've contact them several times and have always found them to be extremely responsive and helpful. Also you can call them at:

phone: 828-251-0090
toll free: 800-948-1990

From my experience, Moog would get a 10/10 for customer support.
