DIY - MMV EB Case re-finishing !

I know, I'm nuts..

Has anyone done this to their MMV EB ? I have the black/blue sparkle.. After 3 years and seeing all the awesome finishes available, I think I'm ready for a change..

I didn't realize that the wood underneath was so pretty until it got a little scratch.. I was considering just ordering a new case from Moog (which BTW is do-able, I think they quoted me somewhere between 250 - 300 USD...

But I have a perfectly fine case, a hand sander, and the drive to do it! So, I think i want to..

I just wanted to see what others have to say, any words of warning, and so on..

Also, if any one has done it to their EB, I'd love to see a pic!

If you are sure that you can do it then go for it.

Ive seen what some people have done with their custom finishes on the synthesizer.com and they look neat.

Hi Nick,

I'm very experienced with woodworking and refinishing. I believe the electric blue cabinet is made of ash (someone correct me if I'm wrong) and painted black or whatever color that is. Similar to many home stereo speakers and even my Event monitors-though they're typically veneers. Ash wood has large pores and soaks up finishing stains, paints etc., like a sponge. It's unlikely you'd be able to just sand it off. You'd want to use a stripper, which is a big mess (in more ways than one ;). Start by removing all the electronics from the case. Since it is solid wood I suppose you could try some sanding and see what happens. You may just have to re-paint it, like maybe some psychedelic pattern. I haven't seen one like that yet!. Let us know how it goes.

I concurr with dizz.
If that's the price for a new case (I can't imagine), it would be less hassle all the way around. I've seen white oak take stains in 1/2" deep. Ash probably takes paint in 1/8", depending on moisture content. It sounds like you'll be breathing stripper (ha) vapors for awhile.

Ya, let us know. I drool for a birds-eye maple case.

Well the scratch tells me that the paint didn't go that deep, and eighth of an inch is DEEP!

Also, I've seen different wood/type/grain used for EBs .... So, the newer EBs you can see the thick grains in the wood and the early ones were sanded smooth before painting...

So I think that it will be easier to remove than some might think...

I sanded the black paint off my etherwave in like 20mins.. Looks great with a Mahogony stain !!!

WELL I DID IT...

And I'm totally happy about it and have a new appreciation for how well built the Voyager is, as this was the first time I took it apart !

I also used this opportunity to move the Voyager logo to the right hand side (ala Model D) ....

The color I ended up using was Minwax "Sedona Red" ... It was QUITE a task getting all that black paint and blue sparkles off.. Took about 4 hours!

I like it !!
