expression pedals

Post by jgirv » Tue Jun 03, 2008 4:42 am

hi all...
... quick question regarding using an expression pedal with the LP SEII...
will those higher resolution MIDI controller values be recognized by the LP when received at the CV inputs? In other words, if I use a pedal to control filter freq., for example, will I get that same seamless sweep I get when I rotate the pot on the LP panel? ... and, if so, is this something that would only be transmitted by a Moog pedal, or could I use one I already have, (like a Yam FC7) to do the same... thanks for your ideas, jgirv

I could be wrong about this, but I don't think that CV input is translated into MIDI at all. When you turn a knob, that does two things: it adjusts the internal control voltages directly, and also sends MIDI data about the knob twist. But AFAIK, CV sent to the side jacks is simply summed with the internal CV, and no MIDI is generated. If I'm wrong hopefully someone will correct me.

There are a wide variety of expression pedals that work with the LP. The manual has information about the exact specs if you want to check for sure before buying, but I've always had pretty good success just plugging in whatever is lying around.

thank you... I did read the manual further, and, yes, it's the pots for filter fq, etc, that are the high-resolution ones... and the side inputs are pure CV...I have a CV-Midi converter hanging around the studio, but I think I'll run some comparison tests using various combinations soon.... thanks again for the reply, jgirv

This may explain the imaginary feeling I have that it's more fun to play with the filter cutoff using the knob than the pedals. I could just be imagining that though, or the fact that it's possible to move it back and forth a lot faster :)

I think it would have been cool if the LP had an assignable CV out in software, so we could map the expression pedal to arbitrary parameters based on software -- though that's probably not possible. It would allow for controlling things like the wave or OSC2 though, and that would be slick :)

Yes, moog could release some vx-351 expander for the LP, so we can track pitch with the ring modulator and more... much more...

+1.

Especially if that enables having a lot of free extra LFO's to attach to weirdness.

(Though I suppose they'd expect you to plug in the new floor pedal to that)

using the Moog EP-2

Post by jgirv » Fri Jun 13, 2008 2:44 pm

...well, decided to go ahead and add a Moog EP-2 pedal... works just fine, BUT...

is there a specific way to set it up so that the range of the pedal is the same as the range of the filter knob? Even with the side adjustment on the pedal to the max, it seems just short of the full sweep that the knob on the LP gives you. Perhaps the pedal needs to be plugged in when the LP knob is at the half-way point, or something like this? Any ideas, experiences welcome.... thanks, jgirv

Would it be possible for them to do that if the LX-351 was connected to the LP through USB? Would it essentially be a Midi to CV converter then?

Thats about the only thing that I think that they coudl do without changing the hardware of the LP to add an accessory port like on the voyager.
