Syncing a MURF

Post by HB3 » Fri Feb 08, 2008 12:44 am

Imagine, if you will, that I'm a total noob. This shouldn't be hard, as it's true. (Actually, I'm really a bass player, but let's keep it to ourselves.)

I recall a post here some time ago about syncing a MURF to an incoming audio click; is this a hallucination on my part, or is such a thing really possible?

Generally speaking I'm interested in syncing Moogerfoogers to either an audio click or midi, though I guess midi sync isn't possible at the moment -- right? Is this what a MIDI>CV converter does?

One final question, in those Freqbox video demos posted on this website, can anyone explain what that guy is actually doing to make the Freqbox apparently sync with the drum sequence? Is this via a gate or some sort?

There, see? Noob.

The keyboards on the second track, "Overture," were created using my new LP stage edition, which I love.

You need somthing to convert audio into a Gate signal. and then feed that gate into the tap on the murf (tip or ring will make a difference on how it syncs) MF101 almost does this with envelope control. my synthesizers.com Q 118 instrument interface works better though- it is a true gate.

A midi -cv can play back a midi track.. and if you can send midi click data as notes (not just the midi clock) througha midi to cv then it will be read by your murf.

Don't apologize for being a bass player! Hold your head up, there are fellow low-enders here as well!

I do not know about other sync methods, and I don't know if the new MP-201 will allow you to MIDI sync the tempo of the Murf (or Bass Murf). But there was a guy on ebay who was selling a MIDI interface that syncs the tempo of the Murf. I purchased one from him, and I have found that it works very well and I can sync the tempo of the Murf to my Alesis SR-16 Drum Machine. I think that the guy goes by "digitize for less" or something like that on ebay.

Ah, ok. Useful information. I've been trying to figure out exactly what the 201 can and cannot do, and if it's capable of what you describe, I'm in. And I think I might've seen one of those devices on ebay you're talking about.

So take the Freqbox demo video. The Freqbox is being gated by the drum sequence -- the gate opens in time with the drums, so the resulting audio through the Freqbox always sounds synced?

Can someone recommend a MIDI>CV/Gate?

Was this what you were talking about, or is there something else? I recall seeing something else.

"Use as a clock input, bypassing the tap tempo."

No, that is what Moog sells, which allows you to step from one step to the next within each preset animation. The device that I am speaking of is a small black box with one MIDI In jack, a 1/4" balanced output jack, along with a switch to put it in 8 step or 16 step mode and a jack for a Boss style AC adapter. I will try and post pictures of this over the weekend. This box takes over the "rate" control knob so that the rate is controlled by your MIDI device.
