Using Micromoog audio patching to emulate Moogerfoogers
Greetings,
Can anyone out there advise me what settings i would use when patching audio through a Micromoog's filter to achieve the same effects as a Moogerfooger MF-101 or Mf-102? Theoretically this seems like it should be possible. I also have a cp-251 if that helps. Thanks in advance.

Don't stack the magnets the wrong way
Okay,
If you have never tried to run audio into the Micro before then you might have to boost the signal somehow, either from an amp or something.
I used a digital recorder as a mixer, headphone out to the audio in.

here is a pic of a sound chart, let me explain what it means.
Almost all of the pots that I did not mark don't have an effect on the sound, the exception being the noise.
Cutoff Freq halfway between -3 and 0
Emphisis halfway between the 5 and the line
Contour Amount between the line and +3
Filter Mod by Osc STRONG
Filter Mode FULL
Bypass ON
Mod Source Pulse or Triangle waveshape
Routing OSC & Filter
With this patch you are essentially using the filter in an oscillitory mode AND it will continually sound. You have to play with the contour and emphisis knobs in order to lessen that sound so when you aren't playing your instrument, you really won't hear it.
Also, you can add noise if you like, but the OSC FREQ, Filter ENV and VCA are all bypassed.
Now you can really emulate the MF-102 with this patch, especially with the Modulation Routing, since it has the Pulse and Triangle wave options. Activate this with the mod wheel. You can also use some sample and hold and this will sound really cool.
I ran a bass in so I chose a high freq on the OCTAVE knob. (If you run a guitar in you might want to pick a lower octave perhaps) Now, keep in mind that since the filter will continually sound, then experiment by pressing a key because the last key depressed will effect the pitch of the filter. I don't know what instrument you want to run in there so you will just have to experiment. It will make some cool sounds to accent your input signal.
I hope that this helps. Eventually Ill probably scan the entire MicroMoog Owners Manual and upload it to Moogspace or provide it per request as a zip file, but I don't know when Ill get around to that. What I will do though is I will attatch a Blank soundchart so that you can print it out and xerox it so that documenting your work will be easier. (Ive taken lots of pics of the micro with a note describing what songand what sound and this sucks. Long live the Voyagers memory)
Let me know how it turns out for you.

Obviously 1st you would plug in whatever it is you are trying to filter into the audio in. then turn off the oscilator and switch the bypass on.
to recreate the MF101 you would need something to trigger the the S-trig input, Like the envelope out of the MF101...but that would be redundant.
as far as ring mod, you would need to switch the filter mode to TONE and then adjust the cutoff and contour amount to your liking. then you can modulate it with the mod wheel
some signals may be to weak, like guitar or bass, so you will need some sort of volume booster. mixers work well

CF,
THats a good point too about the Filter Mode being in the TONE as the owners manual sound charts for RINGMOD say to do that.
Depending on how you are running the sound in though, putting the filter on TONE in this instance could possibly overpower the input signal and it woudn't be all that useful for recording because the filter will constantly ring. Switching it to FULL you can get a Ring Mod like sound but its only really heard AFTER you play the note on your input.
Plus, depending on the condition of your Micro, the switches might be scratchy or inconsistant in what they do to the filter.
But I also think that its worthy to note that in a lot of the sound charts provided in the owners manual they have alternate settings that they reccomend (such as putting the filter on STRONG or raising the Mod wheel)
How did you get your Micro? Man i really love that thing, don't know what I would do without it. HEHE

Something else that I jsut thought of....
If you have a cp-251, and an expression pedal and a few patchcords, then you can use the Ep-1 or 2 to sweep the filter.
Heres the link:

I think that if you follow that diagram, then you can emulate the 101 by routing that patch into the FILTER IN connection and get to wiggling your ankle hehe.

Re: How did I get my Micromoog
Thanks for all of your suggestions! The Micro was a gift. I helped the synth player in my older brothers band move, find an apartment, get a job etc. His older borther had purchased the micro new in the mid-seventies. So, in a way, I am the second owner. Anyway it was a basket-case that barely functioned and was held together by duck tape. Several months and several hundred dollars later it came out of the repair shop working perfectly. I was assured that they had found the last new router switch available anywhere. The micro is back in the shop now with some issues with its keyboard, but I hope to have it back soon. I love it and still have much to learn about the analog world. Thanks again for your help.

My MicroMoog is pretty much my fathers haha. Well it was a gift to him, given to him by someone who would buy the latest and greatest, use it for awhile and then give them away. Now he doesn't ever use it so I claimed it.
The best Moog is most definately a free one!
THe gift that keeps on giving.
Eric
Oh yeah, i was in my grandmothers attic and I found the original box that it goes in and says Buffalo, NY on it. I saw that OO from the name and reckignized it instantly!
