Synchronicity

Post by Southernone » Wed Aug 08, 2007 9:52 am

As the anniversary of Bob's passing approaches, I have had a number of people share strange coincidences either on Bob's birthday (May 23) or the day of his passing (Aug. 21) which can only make one smile. And which would definitely have made Bob smile as he was a believer in the synchronicity of events. Here are two that I have knowledge of. I would be curious to read if others have had similar occurences.

Two years ago, a friend of a customer was given a Minimoog to
fix. This Minimoog was in storage in Canada for over a decade and
finally brought to Idaho where it's owner lives. It had all sorts of problems from use and abuse on the road compounded by sitting unused for so long in an un-climate-controlled environment. The friend worked on the thing every chance he got but could never find the real source of the problem as to why it wouldn't make any discernable or predictable sounds. Then one day he called saying "I GOT THE MOOG WORKING! I just plugged it into my bass amp and it just started working."

Our customer replied, "That's great. BTW, did you hear Bob died yesterday?".....

That Minimoog is still in working order and sounds fantastic though we
never figured out what was wrong with it. But the fact that it spontaneously started working the day after Bob passed is just bewildering.

And another...
This is a bit more personal. Some of you may be aware that Sonic State did a count down of the Top Synths of all time. The count down started in January with Numbers 20 to 16 and they randomly released five more thru the first half of the year. On May 23rd, they announced the number one synth of all time... The Minimoog. I sent the guys who run Sonic State a note thanking them for honoring Bob on his birthday and received an immediate reply back... They had no idea that May 23rd was his birthday! Needless to say they were shocked and amused.

Anyway, I have enjoyed these and like I said I'll bet there are others out there??

You might check out the number 23 in wikipedia.
Many people cite 23 as a strange number.

Me?

My mom was born May 23rd, 1929.
Five years later, Bob Moog was born, May 23rd, 1934
Five years later, a late film composer friend of mine (Michel Colombier) was born, May 23rd, 1939
2+3=5, btw.
This year, my father had a heart attack on May 23rd.

One day I thought to myself, "I think I'm going to hook up my Rogue and just improvise a piece of music." I did, and then I decided to record one more track along with it. For the second half, I decided to use the Rogue as a Taurus II but played with hands and keyboard. I think this was the first time I decided to do that.

Anyway, within the next day or two I heard about Dr. Moog's passing, and realized that I recorded the piece around the same time that he passed away (I was living in Japan at the time so the day was different but the same if time zones were taken into account). So I renamed the tune "In Memoriam".

The Taurus concept has since become a really important part of my music.

Hmm, two years today (Thanks, Bob!) as I learned on the Moog homepage.

I just received my Moog 105B, 107, VX-351, Afterpressure Upgrade and 2xEP-2s.

And I saw the Moog movie for the first time last night.
