Get your Freq on

Post by RadioLab » Mon May 21, 2007 8:15 am

Got my 107 over the weekend...f@#king WoW man. its everything that was promised, and more...this thing does tricks I never imagined, seriously ...and I've only just scratched the surface with what I intend it to be in my setup. I hooked my 75 Strat up to it for openers and needless to say, I was impressed. ie.,The drone setting is way kool for creating some complex melodies over simple chord patterens. Quite Nice

Bobs dreams are still knocking me out. ...and the price was next to terrific, I lucked out gettin one from my guy at the Music Store for 275, Boxed and Sealed. Anyway guys, you will not put it down once you start to monkey with it, its just that good. Well, for me it was, anyway...cheers 8)

Actually, five short audio clips were posted on MoogSpace back on May 10:

The only problem for me is that the sound samples posted on Moog Space were with a synthesizer (Voyager or Korg) that were fed into the 107. It is hard for me to tell if any of the sounds were the 107 on its own or if the sound is a mix of the synth and 107 output. I would like to hear the 107 with electric guitar or bass, to see how the hard sync function works. It would be great if anyone would post a sound sample with the 107 into the 101 or the 107 into the Murf, as I play the bass guitar and I own both the 101 and the Bass Murf pedals. I am trying to decide on my next pedal purchase, between the 107 and the 102, please help me out if you can guys!

The S&H sample is really nice on there. So is the MS20 one.

Exactly. Sort of defeats the object of trying to advertise their new product, doesn't it?

So far the only sample I've heard of the Freqbox is the one they put on the main site, which basically sounded like a Walrus with wind, which didn't make me want to rush out and buy one. So they did that and then expected people to pay to hear more. :D

I'll be interested to hear what people on this site do with the box. That's going to be the real demonstration.

Point taken about the use of synths with the FreqBox. But since Cyril's NAMM demo was done with a guitar, Brian and I thought this was an opportunity to try it with a few synths and post some of the results for others to hear.

The synth sounds used were all relatively static. All of the modulations you hear in the clips are the result of tweaking the knobs on the 107. The sync function in the FreqBox can create sounds very similar to the Voyager's oscillator sync (similar to the synth sound in 'Let's Go' by the Cars), but the envelope follower and FM circuits can further transform the sound into hundreds of other timbres (fuzz, ring mod, intermodulation distortion, etc.). The audio clips only hint at what a synthesist can do with the FB.

Now that the FB is shipping, I'd expect others will soon post the guitar and bass samples you're looking for.

FreqBox or Ring Mod? Tough call if you're only going to buy one. IMO, the FB might be a better choice for a guitarist or bassist as it allows you to stay more in the sonic realm of a guitar effect (albeit a pretty extreme guitar effect). The Ring Mod seems better suited to synths in general (again, IMO), but both devices have their place in any musician's toolbox. It all depends on the sound you're going after.

I was not very impressed with the NAMM demo with Guitar, and I do hope that others will post some samples soon. I haven't heard anything convincing that would make me want to purchase the 107 yet at this point, and I was hoping that one of the first few people that received one could post some samples that would show me why it is as great as everybody says that it is. It isn't that I probably won't buy just one or the other of the 102 and the 107, as I am now addicted to the Moogerfooger line of pedals, but which one I will buy next!

One musician's "great" is another's *yawn*. :)

Demos are all well and good, but obviously nothing replaces checking out the gear for yourself using your own instrument. The FB is one of those pedals that you really need to take the time to explore to see what it can do for you. After my own two short hours with it, I still came away thinking "but what if I used it for this or that?". There's a lot to discover with this one. Good luck!

BTW - If you get the FB, I'd like to hear what you can make of it with your bass!
