Where should I buy in USA?

Post by solar » Wed Apr 28, 2004 5:41 pm

Eminent AE Voyager purchase… I’m so hyped! My first moog!

My question: where should I purchase it? I contacted a few local shops listed on moog's vendor list for a price quote (I'm in Seattle). Are there any reputable online options where I could place an order and get a good price, no shipping charges and perhaps even no tax?

Hey Solar,

Congratulations! I bought my MMV Sig from Guitar Center a year ago for 3K. That's rather high according to some other posts, but I had to have it. I've bought quite a bit from Musicians Friend but you're generally gonna pay the price listed. They're selling the Performer for $2495. (although the pic shows the blue backlit wheels, which I believe are white on the Performer). They also have expression pedals etc,,,, Everything I've ordered from them has arrived within five business days. I think shipping is free for orders over $200 or so. Not sure about taxes. I'd have to dig up some old receipts, but you shouldn't have to pay them since they don't have storefronts. BTW Guitar Center owns Musicians Friend, at least that's what one of their guys told me. Anyway, check www.musiciansfriend.com

Guitar Center is a chain with stores in many states; if you purchase something by mail order, webpage, or over the phone and there is a GC in the state where you reside, then GC is obligated to charge you sales tax.

Just a follow up. (not that I want to argue, I value MC's comments highly) I checked my receipts and they didn't charge tax for shipments to Texas. This was on one of my order confirmations-- * Application Sales Tax will be added for UT, WA, and MO orders--. I'm not sure what "application tax" means? I believe these are the states that have MF warehouses (my stuff ships from KC, MO). If so, then you "normally' have to pay taxes if the company has facilities in the same state in which you're buying. I think that's why GC calls their online shopping sites MF, which is a different company. So anyway, blab, blab, blab, yes, you'll probably have to pay taxes in WA state. Go to GC first and try one out, they may deal with you.

Enjoy!

no more moogs at guitar center

Post by chihuahuaphile » Thu Apr 29, 2004 12:54 am

back in november i bought a MMV performer for $1895.98 at Guitar Center!! but they do not distribute moog products anymore.i was told that mine was the last one in the US and they could not order anymore.the one i have was shipped from a store in another state.
i also had a hell of a time ordering in a gig back from them because of that.
so count guitar center out.its a shame on their part, because i was about to order a couple of moogerfoogers from them. ohh well. heh

Guitar Center is no longer an Authorzied dealer. Also, although the seller may not collect sales tax for your state made on an out of state sale purchase, you're are required by law to report this come tax time. Of course nobody really does. I ordered mine from http://www.sweetwater.com/ You'll usually pay the price listed. Free shipping is tough to come by on large items.

Thanks for the posts guys. Ya, I too ran into the GC thing. Called and the guy told me they were no longer an authorized dealer. Do they still sell moogerfoogers or nothing at all?

I did however find these guys via a google search. No tax and free shipping and the standard $3k price...but I've never heard of them. I wouldn't be such a cheap skate but man a moog can really slap a person's bank account silly!

They sound familiar, but I can't recall. I would call and speak with a rep. Plus you'll want to find out the lead time on availability. Moog only manufactures enough Voyagers to meet demand so they might not have any on hand to ship right away.

Yea, I remember reading about the GC and Moog issue and some people were able to pick up Performers at unbelievable prices, just like Randy did. You wont find them selling any Moog products now.

I'm not a fan of GC/Musicians "Friend" for a number of reasons (all negative). I bought my SE direct from Big Briar, but if I were going to go to a store or order online, I'd go with Sweetwater because in my music purchasing experiences they have by far the best service.

Sweetwater is the place

Sweetwater Sound is great. If you call, ask for Jason.

Though I bought my Voyager elsewhere (and got an incredible deal because they were making room for the Anniversary Edition) I bought my MoogerFoogers and plenty of other gear from Sweetwater. I've never had a problem. They know their stuff and treat you with respect.

i didn't have any problems with Guitar Center in Arlington,TX.actually i was surprised how much they went out of their way for me, i originaly ordered a MMV Sig Ed for $3498 back in december of 2002.and they let me put it on layaway for almost a year.my salesman called me about 4 months into my layaway and told me they were running a sale, and that he reworked my ticket and repriced it at $2999. $500 off! then last november i read on this message board that Guitar Center were selling MMV performers for $1898 at the location in new jersey, so i went back to guitar center and they let me switch my order from a signature to a performer.and shipped it in from out of state.thats $1600 less than i was originaly going to spend!!

i was very happy with guitar center.
damn, that sounded like a paid endorsment. heh

Moog @ Guitar Center

Post by gee_lo » Thu May 20, 2004 6:58 am

I too, am one of the lucky ones to snag a NEW voyager performer from the Guitar Center in Springfield, NJ for only $1799!!!!! (they transfered it from Boston)

I don't know the reason why Moog is not being carried in the CG anymore... but Moog (tech support) did tell me that they are always getting busted Moogs in for repair from the GC's stock. It seems as though the kids that work over there do not know how to treat a real analog synth, and bust them up all the time.

Moog sounded real frustrated when I even mentioned GC. I wanted to have my board tuned up, and Moog INSISTED that I send my Voyager to them personally, and not let their barbaric shipping dept. handle my "baby".

"Oh ya, those moogs, kinda fragile, the LFO blew out within a month" said the Guitar Center sales guy in my town about the abused demo model...while praising the new shipment of Berhinger "it's toob essence dood" mic pres.

Sigh.

This post has generated many excellent comments and lots of views. I want to give you Moog's perspective.

GC is an excellent large chain. Like many large chains your experience will vary from store to store - some good; some bad. For Moog Music to thrive we need enthusiastic and knowledgeable dealers. Dealers who like Moog are passionate about the lines they carry and interested in helping the musician find the very best products for their music. These are the dealers who will take a risk on new, innovative product that Moog will continue to develop. Our needs and those of GC were not the same. So we decided to part company. When we did they dumped their inventory at prices below their cost. It's their business and their perogative to do this but it hurt all of our independent dealers.

All said we know the bottom line dollar is equally important to any of you who did not have the opportunity to buy when GC dumped. I would encourage any one who is considering the purchase of a Moog product to purchase from an authorized dealer. They are all listed on our website and we try our best to pick ones who will support you fully.

Most importantly we thank you for considering a purchase for without you we have nothing; we are nothing.
