Could I make a polyphonic Voyager w/synth modules?

Post by sir_dss » Fri Apr 09, 2004 11:12 pm

Hey,
With OS 2 they say you could have a 16 voice Voyager using Midi Key Order(If you could have/afford 16 Voyagers). So I was wondering...

There are quite a few modular synth makers out there today who have very reasonably priced stand alone VCO's. Blacet, Paia, MOTM come to mind. Blacet is working on a Midi to CV converter and if I had one, and some VCO's could I somehow hook them up, set up the Midi Key Order to each Midi to CV VCO, run those through the Voyager's External In and have a polyphonic Voyager? The idea sounds pretty exciting if it would work.

Anyone?

Well not quite.

Even though you may get control of multiple oscillators, routing them back through the MMV external input only gives you one filter/amplifier combination to process the sound. A true polyphonic synth would have at least one filter/amplifier path for each voice of polyphony.

Not a bad idea, but likely not the polyphonic Voyager you were hoping for.

Greg,
It seems like if you had filters for each VCO it would be harder to blend together opposed to everything just going into the Voyager's filter.

Not just filters, but also VCA's for control of individual note articulation. In effect, each note of a true polyphonic synth (think of a Memory Moog) has a complete signal path consisting of oscillator(s)-filter-amplifier for each 'voice'. The output of each voice is then mixed together to provide a mono (or stereo) output.

That said, I understand what you're considering. And you could experiment with this idea if you have a another polysynth handy. Simply patch the polysynth audio output into the the external input of the MMV and connect both with MIDI cables. Playing cords on the MMV keyboard will trigger all the notes on the polysynth and the MMV filter will process and 'blend' them. Of course, you'll need to select or create a patch on the polysysnth that gives the closest sound to 'oscillators only'(bypass the filter if possible, or open it to the fullest).

Have fun!

Greg,

You almost got it. I dont just want to run some other synth into the Voyager. I want to know if "Midi Key Order" on OS 2 will trigger each external VCO/Synth/ECT and that one only.

Lets say I play a C chord on the Voyager's keyboard.

The C of the chord is played using the MMV's VCO
The E will be played on a (lets say)MOTM VCO, triggered but a Midi to CV converter.
The G will be played on another MOTM VCO, triggered but a Midi to CV converter.

Does this work? Am I explaining this properly?

Your explanation seems correct, at least as far as I understand how the Voyager MIDI key order is implemented. As to whether it works or not, that I can't say since I only have the Voyager and no other modular equipment.

You might try sending an email to the Moog folks about this.

BTW, not harm in trying to route another polysynth into the Voyager. It will give you an idea of what your idea sounds like.

Cheers!

Greg
