patchbay setup question
patchbay setup question
ok, i already posted this in another topic but thought i would repost this in it's own topic.
ok i'm about ready to sit down with my patchbay and i just don't want to screw anything up. i basically just want to be able to have all of my ins and outs on the front of the patch bay with no special wiring. i'm still abit hazy on the half normal and all that.
i know that one of them automatically connects two pieces of gear without having to do anything on the front but this is not what i want. the guy in the store said all i have to do is plug the cord in all the way. say the ring mod "in" to the first top back jack and then that would correspond to the front top jack. then i could have the first back bottom jack go the out of the ring mod and that would correspond to the front bottom jack.
does this sound right? i noticed that when i insert a plug into a jack on the patch bay there seems to be several stages of how far i can plug into. i am assuming that plugging into various stages would mean half normalled and that if it's plugged all the way it's just going "straight through" to the other side?
thanx

UMM OK...TRS is Stereo balanced and TS is Mono unbalanced...It would be helpful to know what brand of patchbay you have...When you insert a cable into the patch bay the first click is mono or TS and all the way in is stereo or TRS if you are using a TRS cable...Which ever cable you are using you can plug them all the way in...Normalled and half normalled refer to the way the signal or audio is routed from the back to the front...When you plug two cables in the back one on top of the other, normalled lets them go straight through to their respective outs on the front...Half normalled lets you tap into either signal from either port on the front and monitor that signal...Normalled is good for plugging in stuff you allways want routed to the same ports like mixer in and outs to a sound card or mixer send and returns to an EFX rack...Half normalled is good for spliting and re routing things to multiple sources...Try a few normalled and a few half normalled...Half would be good for Foogers into Foogers or CP's...Word...
Mo' Analog...Mo' Pusle Width Modulations...

The reason I was asking about TRS and TS cables is because of the multiple clicks when plugging in, Duke was asking about.
Thanx Marc.
Ohh and whats your opinion on the Neutrick Patchbay linked above?
thanx for the replies guys. yeah it's the neutrik. i was looking at my friends behringer patch bay and it's laid out very intuitively. i think i need by patch bay setup so they are all open. i don't need normalled or half normalled. since i just want my ins and outs on the front. there are just so many routing possibilities that it wouldn't make sense to have say the ring mod and murf permanently connected. i read on the neutrik website that there are cards on the bottom that i think have to be pulled out or something in order for it to be open, half normalled etc.. but i couldn't find anywhere that said pull it out this much for this and that much for this.
i already realize that trs can be plugged into different stages. but this patch bay seems to have more than the regular trs 2 stage plug. i think it's got like 3.

crisis averted. i went to the place i bought my patchbay and luckily there was a guy who had one working today. so for anyone who gets one of these you have to unscrew the top faceplace and remove the entire card with the jacks and all and then re-insert it depending on which configuration you want.

Hey Duke,
I just got my patchbay(Neutrik NYS-SPP-L).
Are you using TRS for the audio in/outs and TS for the CV in/outs? Does it matter? My reason for asking is becuase I'm about to order some bulk cable and plugs and am wondering if should just order cable and plugs for TRS only or get both TRS and TS.

You should get TRS for the CV jacks. Using TS will work fine with a patchbay UNLESS you want to use an expression pedal. TS will short one of the potentiometer terminals and you wont be able to use an expression pedal. TS are alright for audio jacks, though.Suburban Bather wrote: Are you using TRS for the audio in/outs and TS for the CV in/outs? Does it matter? Its great! Its a good EQ, it does what it supposed to. I don't know how spectacular an EQ can get, but this one seems to do the trick.Duke Foog wrote:hey oyster nice 10 band eq man! how does it sound?
Its just one of those things I never planned on buying, but it was just sitting in the corner of a buddy of mine's studio and I asked if he wanted to sell it. And he did!
It would be cool if Moog started making some pro audio gear again. I'd buy it.

Thats what I was hoping to hear. Would rather just deal with one type of cable only.OysterRock wrote:You should get TRS for the CV jacks.
