Identify this synth?

Post by writeroxie » Fri Oct 06, 2006 6:39 am

anyone know what kind of synth this is? it appears to have a ribbon controller along the top. the best shot is right at the beginning (but watch the whole thing, if for nothing else... the sickest dance moves).

I have always wanted one of those. I have a weird weakness for combo organs! It would be cool to have a combo organ with a ribbon, no? : )
They come up on eBay from time to time... but the shipping is usually nasty!

I think that's the same organ Miles Davis used during his "electric" period.

The Osmonds. What a trip.

Was this how the Crazy Horses effect was done - the ribbon controller on this?

Oh, ok - I've just checked out the Youtube link. :D I didn't look at that because the keyboard had already been identified when I read the thread.

Wow, so this is a Yamaha combo organ with Ribbon controller, and not a Yamaha CS?

Looks awesome, and sounds incredible in that video.

Crazy Horses was the Buchla wasn't it? (System 3?).

On the YCs though, they have a special place in my heart due to my favourite band in the late 70s/early 80s. - Magazine (formed by one of the original Buzzcocks).

Their keyboard player (Dave Formula) played a YC (a 45 I think?) and it sounded great at the time. (With an ARP Oddysey and Yamaha electric grand amongst others). No Moogs though?!

Still look for a YC, but they are rare in great condition in the UK at least (like most Combos, they were gigged not loved).

Off to listen to some Magazine tracks now!

The only thing that could make that clip weirder was if they were using a Buchla.

I'll say this

I have gained new respect for the Osmonds. That tune, given the era, had some bite to it. the guitar solo was lousy but the rest of the arrangement was solid. great synth effect
