I just bid on one without the software, not sure if I'll get it or be able to use it (who knows when I'll bother to get a c64).

Looks like it could be a lot of fun, though. Wonder if it could run standalone as a midi-to-CV box? That would be great, although I highly doubt it.

It's useless without a C-64 and probably even more useless without the software.

I have one, but I've never used it (no C64). It doesn't run as a stand alone MIDI to CV box, although that would be really cool if it did. I paid $100 for mint in box Song Producer a few years ago, so keep that in mind when bidding.

I ended up winning it for $11.05 (shipping's $30, though). It will be useless for now, but maybe someday I'll get a C64, and I can probably track down a disk image of the software before then (I.S. - I'd definitely be interested in buying or trading for a copy of the software if you can make one). If not, not too much of a loss.

Well, it didn't go above 11:05, so now I'm jsut waiting for it to arrive and to find a disk image of the software. We'll see. If nothing else, I can probably ebay it again in a few months and make back most of what I paid.

Looks like they're going for $100-$200 for complete packages, so even if I had to pay a bit for software it'd be a decent deal.

Well, that was quick. Took less than 2 minutes to find the software, another 15 to download an emulator, make sure the Rom worked, and get every conceivable utilkity I might need to get it transferred back to a C64 should I come across one.

Same here - I don't actually have one yet. Found a place that sells manuals for 8 or 9 British pounds, so I'll have to get one of those at some point.

Here are a few pics of my Song producer setup.
It should be noted, the song producer is not a MIDI to CV unit. It can
output 8 analog drum triggers with no velocity, for use in MIDI sequences.
Or in sync mode it can divide an incomming clock out the 8 outputs.
Or the MIDI command mode for program control of a MIDI synth setup.
Incluning splits, program changes.

Using a Commadore SX-64, a portable self-contained C-64.

Here is a typical setup, using a Drumfire analog drum synthesizer.

Yeah, I figured that it couldn't do midi to CV, but one can always hope. But to cut to the chase, any chance of scoring a copy of the manual from you? Either scans or I could pay for photocopies. I'm trading for a C64 on Thursday, and the Song Producer's on its way. All I need's a manual and the parts for a serial adapter so I can transfer the software from my PC.

Well, I've got the c64, song producer and software (which I haven't gotten onto floppy yet, still deciding what approach I want to take with that since all of them seem to requre custom hardware), jsut looking for a manual still. Probably just end up ordering one.

At this point I'm honestly a lot more excited about the possibilities of the Prophet64 (http://www.prophet64.com), honestly, but the song producer looks pretty great. If it's not limited to a single channel per output, it will actually be the most flexible midi interface I own, I think![/url]

Prophet64 cart is still on the way, but in the meantime, I've got a solid lead on another free c64, so looks like in the long run I'll be running one c64 with the Moog Song Producer and syncing the second one to it via DINSYNC or MIDI (depending on how much effort I want to put into building hardware from scratch; probably just a simple DINSYNC box will do it for me), maybe sync all that to a computer. Probably won't get around to really perfecting that setup until next spring, though; in the meantime I'll focus on using one or the other at any given time.

Ghost, i think you're setting yourself up for a big disappointment. I've heard not but bad things about the Moog song producer. Stuff about the software not even being complete, even that the manual suggest you finish coding the software yourself! Moog released it quickly right before they went out of business in the 80's. Unlike most Moog gear, it is not a good product. It just a very crappy MIDI sequencer, you can't even play the beautiful C64 sid chips. They're just sitting right there going to waste!

I just hate to see you disappointed after putting a lot of effort into setting it up.

Yeah, but I've only got a few dollars invested in it, and it's not going to do anything that I couldn't do from a laptop if I really wanted to. It's more of a project than anything.

I've heard bad things about the software too, honestly can't imagine it being good simply because of the limitations of the c64 hardware.

On the other hand, IU really like working with limited equipment, so that's only making me more curious. I jsut don't want to spend any money on it.
