I've never touched an LP, but here's my 2 cents.
Take as you will.

No, it is not correct to have analogs a little sharp or flat at the extremes.
Analogs are not "stretched tuned" like pianos.
Tuning is "straight" and each octave played higher should be exactly double the pitch. ie: 110,220,440,880, etc.
In fact, most synths like this usually have a trimmer for hi frequency tracking that attempts to keep the tuning linear very far up in pitch.
This wouldn't be included if it was normal for analogs to be out of tune in only a 3 octave range.
Regardless, it's not normal, but it may be within spec of the LP.
I can't say what tolerance they've tried to attain with the instrument.
Fwiw, I use a custom made crystal based tuner of my own design that is accurate to .001 hz.
For you techs, it's so accurate that it's possible to adjust the phase angle of a stable oscillator against it.

Moog Sources use heated chip technology.
The idea here is that if the circuit is brought to a higher temperature than the outside ambient temperature, the circuit will never be affected by external hot or cold deviations. There's an actual adjustment inside to set this temperature.
It does take a few minutes for everything to stabilize, but on a properly calibrated source, this should take no more than 5 or so minutes.
The problem is that Sources are over 20 years old, the trims may have changed position through vibration, other parts may have deviated since and more likely than any of these, someone may have tweaked the trimmer incorrectly.
Many synths, especially cheaper monosynths, have had previous owners or techs adjust trims they weren't knowledgable about adjusting.
The temp trims are often tweaked and when the owner doesn't know what they affect, they move on to another believing they put the trim back to the exact same spot, which is usually impossible by sight or feel.
It is not possible to mark these trims with a pen or pencil mark and replace them where they should be.

Properly calibrating a Source does not take just a couple of mins, at least for me.
There are a LOT of adjustments inside and not only must they be performed in the proper sequence, they must be adjusted only after the chip temperature is verified or set.
Setting the temp trimmer is not easy at all. The room temperature must first be measured, then entered into a formula to arrive at the proper setting of this trim.
It can take me about an hour to get a Source completely calibrated properly from scratch and often the patches must be fine tuned and rewritten back to memory.
The room temperature should not vary during this period either.
Sources that take a long time to come into tune usually indicates that the temp trim is set too low. The Source can get quite hot around the power supply and with the temp trim set low, this heat can send the unit out of tune over time.
This is one of those things where an owner who has experience with only one example of an instrument has no reference for how things should be.
They assume all instruments are like theirs and only by comparing to other units can they gain insight as to what's normal or not. This is evidenced by the posts here where one person claims theirs is in tune immediately and others cite 20-30 mins for theirs.
I've been lucky (or deranged) enough to compare so many units that I know what correct is or isn't, but this is pretty hard if you've only played one unit.
Anyways, I didn't come here to ruffle any feathers, but I can't stand seeing rumors thrown around either.

It's worth having an analog serviced by someone who knows what they are doing, to get it right, even if it means shipping it elsewhere.

LP #79

Post by yowzer » Tue Aug 29, 2006 8:42 am

#79 has found a home in Brooklyn (via analoguehaven) and it is a solid, beautiful, and well thought-out piece of gear. The simplicity really helps me approach it and start to tinker. Also, they seem to have been designing with working stage situations in mind.

Kevin, thanks for the tips on trimming the temp comp on the Source.

Mine has been dodgy and I bought new trimpots last year to put them in, but job search and that damn flood put that project off. When I find another place to settle into, I'm diving into that project.

Ok peoples.....

I have finally had the chance to check out my LP!

All I can say is......WOW!!

I think I'm in love. LoL

The keys are awesome, the knobs are wonderful, and the interface is easy to navigate.

I was able to get up and running in no time!

As well, I created some insane sounds that were quite impressive within the first hour.

The LP is definitly designed with the performer in mind and that magical connection is instantaniously there!

Can't wait to sequence with the LP and then run it through some outboard FX!

Alright, gotta go......it's hard to stay away!
