Model D: VirtualMusic MUSE card alternative for aftertouch to mod

Post by stiiiiiiive » Sun Sep 14, 2025 10:12 am

Hey Mooguys.

So I've missed the train last year for the last batch of VirtualMusic Muse card for the 2016 Model D. For those who don't know what it is about, see there : https://www.virtual-music.at/en/moog/

I've been searching for one on the local used market but I have moderate hopes to find anyone willing to part with theirs... The main reason I look for this option is I would love to control the amount of modulation with the aftertouch. I've been thinking how to do this with the CV connections and some utility pedals but no relevant solution have come to mind so far.

Hence this question: des anybody here have an idea about how to achieve thise? Any idea is welcome, let's fuel this discussion.

Obvisously, if you have a spare Muse card, I'm interested in it for this reason and others!

I was an early buyer of this MUSE card for my two 2016 minimoog reissues (actually built 2017). And I would never part with it. I bought it mainly for the aftertouch to modwheel thing. And I am using it in the Reduced Modulation setting here most of the time. it is very handy when playing live and you need to use your left hand for chords while playing a lead line with some vibrato now and then. I am not using MIDi here on my minimoogs.

And I don't think someone will undo this add-on card. Rather will the minimoog sold with the installed card.

I am sure you can use the AFTER PRESSURE with max set amount pot to modulate an external LFO amplitude via a VCA, And then feed the variable output into the minimoog reissue MOD. SRC. INPUT.
Or if you need to have the noise modulation source (as the MOD. SRC. INPUT is overriding the noise modulation), you may use the EXT. CONTROL OSCILLATOR INPUT.

You may these external parts as off the shelf Eurorack units and put it in a little box with some PSU to drive these modules.

If you go this or find another way, please document it here for all to see, as this aftertouch controlled modulation is such a useful thing for live playing.
keep on turning these Moog knobs

Hi Till :)

Yeah, I'm quite sure I won't be able to find an unmounted Muse card. I might consider an equiped Mini though.
I plan to use it exactly as you describe: modulation through aftertouch is a big bonus to me.

The MOD SRC input... I've just consulted the manual again because honestly, I thought I had explored that possibility too but reading your suggestion felt like I actually hadn't. I might have discarded it then because I wanted to avoid adding any external piece of gear.
However, I will consider this option. I don't have any Euro Rack and don't want to invest this way but I do have a CP-251 on a shelf. I'm quite sure I can even patch it so that I still have the option of using noise a source modulation.

Thanks for this suggestion! I will document anything I try here for sure.

So...!

I turns out the CP won't do the job, neither will my dear Spaceman FX Mission Control.

Indeed, I've remembered two things today:
- I wanted to use the Mini's LFO which is impossible as it has not output.
- Even if using an external one, what I actually need is a VCA that can be controlled by an external voltage (i.e. not just by a potentiometer).
The conclusion I came to some months ago was: I don't have such a thing.

As going Eur Rack is not an option for me, I'll continue exploring the "utility pedal" track...
