Possible to play on top of sequence?

Post by salamonkey » Thu Aug 14, 2025 3:53 am

New to the Messenger - would like to have a sequence play an improvise on top of it.
Is this possible at all?
Once the sequence plays (and REC is off), the keyboard transposes the sequence rather than allowing me to play notes. Any way to change this behaviour?

not sure what you mean by playing "on top".
you are aware that this is a monophonic synth?

Yes, Messenger is monophonic.
What I wish I could is play notes in addition to the playing sequence.

Let me try to explain a bit better:
- Assume the sequencer is playing some notes I have entered.
- Now, I play on the keyboard. Instead of transposing the sequence, I’d expect that
. when a played note falls on a rest it would just play “normally”, sonically adding to the sequence (but not recording to the sequence), and
. when it falls on a note already played by the sequencer it would steal the mono voice (or could be configured such that the next played note, sequencer or keyboard always steals the voice).

At least that is the behavior I’ve seen in other mono synths with a sequencer. It’s a bit like how the Messenger behaves when you record a sequence real-time, but without actually recording the new notes.

Apparently, my last reply has not made it through the forum censorship engine.. waiting for days to see my post appear (seriously, can this forum be used only with such a huge delay??)

Yes, mono -
but I what I know from other mono synths is that if the sequencer is playing and I play the keyboard at the same time, the keyboard will either augment notes to the sequence if played on top of rests, or the mono voice is stolen by the keyboard from the sequencer - depending on the setting.

For my style I find the transposition function rather destructive, as once I dialed in a sequencer with all its parameter settings, i don’t want it ‘touched’ in that regard. Pitch shifting is not a common case for me. But now I have to be super careful not to touch the keyboard, or else it transposes.
On the other hand, I’d love to live-jam the sequence and introduce single, spontaneous accidentals, etc.

In a way I am looking to play the sequencer in the same way as in its present RECORDING mode, but without the notes being recorded, if that makes any sense.
