Does a Muse replace a Sub 37?
I have a Sub 37 I've had for years that I love the sound of for leads, basses, and even some minimal paraphony. I am considering getting a Muse. Can a Muse basically do everything the Sub 37 can do and more? Or do they still serve two separate purposes? I have played a Muse for about an hour in a store and I like the sound a lot. I'm wondering if the Sub 37 can get more raw since too much rawness on a polysynth would just lead to muddiness? Thoughts?

I would keep both, as both have their own charme. In the world of analogue synthesizers you will never have identical "synth personality" with different models.

True, it would be sad to prematurely let the Sub 37 go. If I can afford it, its probably better to keep the Sub 37 and just by the Muse when I can. If later I find the Muse does replace the Sub 37, I can always sell it later.

I played a sub37 and really loved it, but the muse I think is capable of so much more. I would keep it until you are sure. I think there are some synths that just have their own qualities and it’s really down to studio space and money as to whether to keep some or not. I have way too many but love them all and am running out of space.

The Sub 37 and the Muse definitely overlap in some areas, but they each have their own strengths and personality. The Sub 37 is fantastic for raw, aggressive mono sounds — especially bass and leads — and that paraphonic mode gives it some flexibility, but it really shines when used for focused, powerful tones. Its ladder filter and immediate hands-on control make it a go-to for classic Moog character with a modern edge.
The Muse, on the other hand, offers much more in terms of polyphony and modulation depth. It’s designed to cover broader sonic territory — from lush pads and evolving textures to digital-hybrid vibes — and while it can do punchy bass and lead sounds, it doesn’t quite capture the same raw, in-your-face quality that the Sub 37 does natively. That said, with some sound design effort, you can get pretty close.

I've had a Sub 37 for years and absolutely love its sound—for leads, basses, and even some minimal paraphonic work. Lately, I’ve been thinking about getting a Muse. From what I understand, it seems like the Muse could do everything the Sub 37 does and more—but I’m wondering if they still serve different roles.
I had about an hour with a Muse in a store and really liked how it sounded. But I’m curious: does the Sub 37 still offer something more raw or aggressive? Maybe that kind of rawness works better on a mono synth, whereas on a poly it might just get muddy. Anyone have experience with both and thoughts on how they compare?

I’ve spent quite a bit of time with both, and while the Muse definitely expands on what the Sub 37 offers—especially in terms of polyphony, mod matrix, and digital control—it doesn’t replace it in terms of raw analog character. The Sub 37 still has that gritty, immediate punch that really cuts through, especially for mono bass and lead duties. I’d say they complement each other rather than overlap completely. If rawness is a key part of your sound, you might miss what the Sub 37 brings.

Totally makes sense. I’ve noticed that gritty character in the Sub 37 too—it really hits differently. Sounds like the Muse is more flexible overall, but not a straight replacement.
