Cannot make the mother 32 play midi notes

Its driving me nuts.
I'm trying to play Midi notes through Logic Pro into my Mother 32.
It seems to communicate the clock... so i can turn the bpm up and down and it effects the sequence thats programmed into the Mother.

I've got a crave. The exact same set up out of Logic with the same midi cables works fine.
So im figuring my Logic set up and my cables are good.

But nothing out of the M32.

It defaults to a programmed sequence on the M32 when i press play on Logic. And when i press run/stop on the M32 it's just silence. Here i assume the midi tune should play?

Ive been doing the set up for the midi in channel on the m32.. that does not seem to do anything.
I tried out putting on a load of different midi channels from Logic.. in case the Mother had been scrambled in some way. and was looking for channel 9 or 8 ... but no go...

My Midi cable is the right way round!
I have had it working last year. So its possible!.

Ive been through the manual following the steps... but it stubbornly will not work
It's got to be me doing this wrong somehow... i cant believe the Mother is malfunctioning.

is there a factory reset maybe? I feel like ive been fiddling with it for too long now... and could have accidentally mashed some buttons.
I was reading about Keyboard mode and how that could effect it? I tried setting it to that but wasn't totally clear on what i was doing.
