Minimoog model D sound comparison question

Post by GevalIsogen » Fri Jan 17, 2025 3:06 am

Between the Sub 37 and the grandmother, which synth can get the closest to the Minimoog Model D? I would love to hear from owners of both, how do you describe and contrast the sound of the Grandmother vs the Sub 37 or 25? Specifically, I want to achieve the punchy yet round sound of the Minimoog. Thanks!

I can’t speak on the Grandmother. However, the Sub37 can get downright gnarly. The filter features the multidrive circuit, coupled with feeding the sound back into itself. Both of which I don’t think the GM is capable of.

My lucky butt is a day or two away from owning a Minimoog Model D reissue. My sub37 is of the CV type. Thruppled with a Moog One. I may just implode from the bass.

Imma try!

The raw sound of the Grandmother is closer to the classic Moog module sound, which I personally find more authentic than the Sub 37.

In my opinion, the Grandmother's unadulterated sound is more authentic than the Sub 37's since it is more reminiscent of the vintage Moog module sound.

The Grandmother sounds much more vintage. But it's easier to get snappy basses from the Sub 37. So what I'm saying is you need both. 8) You'll probably be happy with either, but they're quite different (and wonderful) beasts.

However, none of them are all that close to an actual Model D. For some sounds, yes, but not as a whole. A vintage Moog Prodigy would get you closer and can be found in roughly the same price range as a Sub 37. It's a significantly less versatile instrument than either the Grandmother or the Sub 37, but it does have that 'something'.
