Best software for performing OS updates?

Post by weasel_bot » Sun Jul 20, 2003 5:41 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm just wondering what people are using to send the Operating System SysEx dumps to their Voyagers? I have MidiOX, but it didn't seem to work with the Voyagers 1.0 OS. I finally had to use an old copy of Cakewalk Home Studio to perform the upgrade.

Is there a trick to using MidiOX that I should know about?

Oh yeah - I'm using a Windows PC - a couple of them, in fact. :)

Cheers,
Paul

Were you then able to get MidiOx to work with the Voyager? I only have midiox for sysex transfer. Please let me know.
thanks,
Mike

In my case MIDIOX was and is working alright since the first version of the Voyager OS.
Seems that any problems are made by the MIDI Interface. I'm using a Steinberg MIDEX8.
best regards

MIDI-OX

Post by FrankB » Mon Jul 21, 2003 3:29 am

Hi,

I found that adjusting the "buffers" of MIDI-OX was very important for upgrading the whole OS.

In MIDI-OX:
Options --> Configure Buffers...
then
Low Level Output Buffers
for "Size"
I'd chosen a smaller amount (e.g. 64 Bytes) and then it was working fine for me. When I used a slower pc (800 MHz) then the original buffer size worked fine, but after upgrading my pc to 1.8 GHz I had to do the adjustments described above.

Regards
Frank

I was wondering if it might be something like that. Can you post the settings you used in MidiOX - Size and Num? Also - what was your delay between buffers?

It's a long story, but I have to perform the OS upgrade once again, and I'd rather use MidiOX. :)

Cheers,
Paul

SendSX works a charm

I tried Midi-ox but couldn't get it to work. I tried SendSX and this little freeware gem does the trick all the time. No prob updating 1.5 at all

Quick note. I did manage to get my Voyager updated. I did use MidiOX, and the settings suggested above. (Thanks for posting them, Frank!!!! :D )

HOWEVER - it was still a painful process. :(

Basically, the Voyager ignored the SysEx dumps. I tried switching cables, rebooting the computer, trying Cakewalk, jiggling the MIDI connector, etc. Nothing worked. Finally, I tried sending the original System ROM image back to the Voyager. At that point, it seemed to "wake up", and listen to SysEx messages. Sent the 1.5 OS, 1.2 Boot, and Preset Files (in that order) and everything works great.

I think the key thing here is, if you're upgrading the 1.0 OS, make sure you're not in a hurry, and can take the time to do it properly. Also, use your favorite MIDI program to make backups of your System ROMs, Boot ROMs, and presets before you start the upgrade procedure. I made two each, then compared the dumps against each other, just to be sure! :D

It seems to go smoothly enough once you get it started, but sometimes getting it started can be tricky. :)

Cheers,
Paul

Yeah, thanks for posting the MIDIox settings! My system would only send or recieve HALF of the presets or data! Now it works perfectly, thanks!

Update woes

Post by HiFiChild » Fri Jul 25, 2003 11:06 am

OK - Trying to update my OS now....

Tried MIDIOx and even the listed settings won't work.

Tried using SendSX as suggested - it's better, but after saying waiting for system exclusive transfer of Bank A, I hit send (using the os1.5.syx file). At this point, the status bar does appear but only gets half way before changing to a highly ominous ROM PROGRAM ERROR and spitting me back to the menu.

I'm now completely frazzled by this and don't want to turn the voyager off lest it never wakes again....

Anyone got any ideas? Even just to tell me I can turn the thing off.

I must confess, I'm also very disappointed at the lack of support for upgrading the OS on the Moog site. It's an excellent synth, and the new features are highly desirable, but the lack of any sort of procedure on how to upgrade I find really quite poor.

OK - As is usual in this sort of matter, I answered my own post. Played around with the delay in sending option (default is 100 ??). 2 was too low, but 5 seemed to work on my P4 2.53, using Midex8 and an RME MIDI port. Proud to say I now have the update installed.

Hi-
I believe you are supposed to upgrade the boot system to 1.2 first, then install the 1.5 OS. I don't want to sound insulting, but are you sure you have the MIDI cables connected correctly? OUT to IN and vice versa? The Voyager has the MIDI inputs labeled IN/THRU/OUT, not the usual THRU/OUT/IN. I've never seen this orientation on any synth before, all of them are THRU/OUT/IN.
