Progress update on Moog One firmware?

Post by Phileosophos » Wed Jul 31, 2024 11:03 am

As much as I'm happy to see Moog Music launching the new Muse product today (and other products of late), I can't help noticing that we flagship-synthesizer owners of the Moog One are still stuck with a product that needs a firmware update. Can we please get an ETA? A progress update? Confirmation that we will get at least one more update? Anything? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

I can't believe indeed that we are stuck with so many bugs after so many years. I am really annoyed by the delays that won't sync perfectly with the clock (there is a 30ms offset that will ruin your dotted eight delays).

I second that emotion.

I understand that under the circumstances this may have become an unsustainable product.
I understand that nobody named Moog has had anything to do with this brand for quite some time.
But what is the value of the Moog brand?

1 Historical significance
2 That SOUND
3 Confidence in an unwavering dedication to produce the absolute finest instruments possible.

I met Bob Moog decades ago and got to chat with him one on one for about 10 minutes. Caught him alone in a room where he was endorsing Kurzweil gear. He was so friendly and generous to talk to an insignificant 23 year old. He gave me his full attention and answered all my naive questions with sincerity. I hope the new owners understand the responsibility that comes from the legacy of this wonderful man and don’t abandon those of us who paid a very steep price for an instrument that one would assume was absolutely future proof.

"Confidence in an unwavering dedication to produce the absolute finest instruments possible."
I think this disappeared with Bob Moog , and if some was left , erosion slowly did the rest until inmusic came along
For a time I hoped the Moog one would be thru to the legacy of Bob..... wishful thinking
the margins and the ability to (mis)use the name are all that is left

Another +1.

16v owner. The Moog One has incredible untapped potential, both in fixing issues relating to MIDI, sync, and additional routing possibilities... There've been lots of musings about these getting addressed, but I think for those One owners that have made a significant investment, it's fair for us to have some sort of response.

I check the forums every couple few months just to see if there's any traction on a FW update... Really hoping for this instrument to be "completed".

If no more software development is planned, please make the source code open source or allow public access to GitHub. We could then iron out things on our own. Or at least try to do so.

Side note: Had my fingers on a Muse today, and well, it's reasonably priced or even a good bang for the buck. But by no means it's close to my beloved ONE.

I am very disappointed about the Moog technical support. The behavior with Moog customers, and the total silence about the Moog One firmware ( I own Moog One, Moog Voyager and the recent bought Model D ), is embarrassing. Come on Moog. Wake up and do not think just to have new customers. Take care of old customers too!!!

As far as I can tell, the last firmware update (V1.5) came out on 5/27/2022.

My 16 V One (purchased in late 2018) was replaced by Moog earlier this year, confirming what I had always suspected, that in addition to the firmware issues, mine had serious hardware defects from the beginning (NOT an ELP reference!). The new One behaves FAR better than my first one (that was effectively an $8000 paperweight), but it still has many of the firmware bugs we all know and hate.

My discussions with a senior Moog official in January of 2023 included a "guess" (and explicitly not a promise) that a firmware update would be forthcoming somewhere between 8 months and 2 years from then - which would be sometime prior to January of 2025.

That was a really unacceptable estimate, but based on what I believe I know now, it won't matter.

In my opinion, the One was released before it was completed because they had invested a substantial amount in producing the units and they needed to get them out the door. Otherwise, the company was going under. So it went out, along with other software issues, with the oscillator /kbd tracking so wonky that most units (including mine) couldn't play the bottom octave anywhere near in tune. I suspect rushing the One to market financially crippled the company which then led to its sale to inMusic.

What I now believe actually happened was that the master coding was designed by a single employee who never really finished the job. What I suspect happened next was that the designer of the code decided that he wanted more money to fix it, Moog (rightfully or not) said no, and so he left - leaving Moog to have to hire people to - effectively - reverse engineer their own firmware. That didn't go well.

The Moog we all knew is gone, having been purchased by inMusic. Their focus is - apparently - bringing new products to market and not fixing the firmware problems of their old "flagship" synth.

It's unclear whether they are still manufacturing Moog Ones, but I'll be very surprised if new firmware ever shows up. I'd be even more surprised if the open sourced the coding to let their users try to fix (or improve) it.

This a lot of “in my opinion”, “what I believe”, “what I suspect” surmising, but unless you have hard evidence to back this up, it seems to just be conjecture.
In the various Facebook Moog One groups there have been posts from folks that were former beta testers and others with inside connections that said their conversations with Moog spelled out that the One was still an active project, and that at least one more big firmware update was indeed coming.
Also, Sweetwater and other resellers continue to have Ones in stock now and list the One for sale.

I’m hoping that the success of the Muse will bring new money into the company and that they can tie up the One’s loose ends soon.

I think that "in my opinion" or " I suspect" etc, they come out just because MOOG DOES NOT officially clarify the situation about the Moog One. And the news that we " have ", they are coming from someone that knows someone else and bla bla bla. This is a not correct behavior towards people that spent a lot of money for their flagship synth, that should be a matter of pride for them and they should support AT LEAST as other synths they produce.
This is my opinion

I’m happy with the Moog One overall but the bugs need to be fixed. Particularly the Midi sync / stuck note issues.

Also Moog explicitly stated they would support tuning systems in an update—it’s ridiculous that the Minitaur has this and not the One.
