mf-102, question about the drive setting

Post by bojo » Sat May 13, 2006 9:58 pm

Hi, maybe this will seem like a dumb question but i'm a new user of moogerfooger so... I just bought a mf-102 ring modulator and I set the drive channel as explained in the manual to have the light turning to yellow most of the time. The thing is that when I use my Qtron which is placed just before my Moog, the light is always on red. Can this do some damage to my Moog? Cause I don't want to blow it. if it's not good I'm just gonna place my qtron after it, but I'd like to have some input on that point before. thanks

I don't think that you can damage it by overdriving it. But I think that it is worthy to note that Moog products CAN and WILL damage whatevevr output speakers you might be using if you aren't careful. They are just awesome like that.

If you notice that when the switch is set to high the Frequency knob will generate some extremely killer lows especially around the 10:00 position to the 3:00 position. So if you are using some headphones then be careful because some of those sub bass tones might be too much to handle for some little speakers. SOme of the high frequencies are really killer on the old ears too.

THe Ring Modulator isn't so much as potentially harmful to speakers as the synths. I know that my MicroMoog has ruined a pair of Roland Headphones lololol. Gotta love that FIlter Cutoff. The Voyager is just sick hehe.

I often wonder if my 102 will blow up my Electro Harmonix Bass Balls unit because that unit has a touch sensitive envelope similar to the 101.

Good Luck

I think I hear the mothership coming.

I was wondering about that drive light being red, too. Mainly because of that carrier osc -> audio input trick, it makes the drive light immediately turn (and stay) yellow when the knob is furthest to the left. Part of that oscillator trick is to turn the knob further to the right to distort the sound (or whatever the term is). Of course that makes the light turn red for most of the knob's travel toward the right. If any of that makes sense, you get a cookie. ;)

I love that MF-102 more every day it seems. Maybe I should marry it :P
