Source prices falling?

Post by eric coleridge » Mon Apr 17, 2006 3:20 am

It looks like since the Little Phatty was unvieled, Sources have been selling for alot less; Maybe it's just coincidence, but it looks like they're coming down to the $600 range (where they should).

This is good news for people looking for vintage Moogs. With any luck the Mini will follow this trend.

Probably going to be true for the Prodigy as well -- I think this guy may be expecting a bit too much! :)

Can you please show me a Source for $600 and I'll snap their hand off!

Well, theres been two on e-bay in the past couple weeks that've ended below $650, It's not that unusual, I guess; They sell in the $700s all the time, just keep an eye out, you'll find one. The thing about e-bay is you just have to wait and watch. But I was surprised to see them dip back into the $600s.

But when that Little Phatty Performer comes out and sells for $1000, who's gonna buy a Source? If the Source goes down then the Prodigy and Rogue should too.

I don't know exactly why I care about it; I don't want any of them (they're all super-inflated); But I've always wanted a Mini and I guess I'm hoping that LP might drive the Mini down a little too...

Dont forget, the source sounds like a source. The phatty sounds like the voyager with and overdrive control, which dont get me wrong is GREAT. But, the source has its own sound with the old moog sound, big bottom and sizzling top whereas the voyager has the new moog sound. less sizzle in the top but smoother and more refined. Both are equals just different. You need a source and a phatty and a voyager and a mini to have all bases covered!

Well I'm trying desperately to get hold of a good Source over here in the UK and the last two available to UK buyers went for well over what you're talking about:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Moog-Source_W0QQi ... dZViewItem

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 7405976716

i totally agree that they're not worth the figure's above, but here at least, they still command silly money.

I would also like to see a dealer selling fully 'logo'd up' LP performers for $1000 that would ship to the UK? Any offers?

one of those sources, (which reached over $800) had a "reserve not met". so it'd didnt technically even 'sell'.

nor did this one ($635)

people bid in such small increments. which is dumb...

bid once at the very end. everything else is just driving the end cost up.

You may need them all, my friend; I'd be happy with one of them. I envy your position--but honestly, I can't see how anyone outside of a synth museum could justify owning more than one or two of those boards.
Obviously, you love Moogs and like to collect them; but the difference in sound between them is likely to be as great between two Minis as it is between a Mini and a Voyager or a Source. It's likely that LP will join this group.
To me, LP looks like a Source with a bunch of exras (ext audio input, VCF, VCA ins, more knobs, etc..) that will sell NEW for nearly the same price.

I can't wait to play it.

The source was my first moog, its a little temperamental to gig with at the mo. I have the voyager to use in the studio but its too precious for road use so thats why i need the phatty as well. Everything i buy for a reason and it has its own particular use and sound. You can never have too many moogs! They are all like different colours and the more colours the more options for translating musical thoughts.

I don't use my Source all that much anymore as I have come to rely on my Voyager but when the urge hits I get a big grin on my face from tweaking that electronic pad. It's interesting that when ppl come into my studio they immediatley go over to the Voyager then gravitate to the Source and luv to play it. They are surprised at its sound capabilities and like the arp and save feature. Everytime I think of selling it I spend a few hours playing and it stays put. I have no interest in the LP as I have those bases more than covered, but a new poly Moog sure would separate my $ from the bank.

I doubt Source prices will fall; in fact they've gone up IMO because (1) of Bob's passing and (2) a Source and LP do not sound exactly the same. I can understand both points of view-not wanting to own every model while on the other hand they *do* sound different.
