expression pedal

I have just purshased the MF-103 and have the analogue delay on order. My question is about the expression pedals. They seem like a smart thing to oder but does it make sense that if I have two pedals that I should buy 12 expression pedals. That seems kinda silly. but is that a good idea, or am I way off here.

I think it depends on how many legs you have.

Actually I find one or two to be sufficient.

Is there a seperate type of pedal used to operate the red switches on he front?

As for the pedals, this is where the water can get a little muddy. Your 103 has an LFO on it that you can use along with the EPs. If you use a patchbay or dedicated mult, you'll be able to control several paramaters with the LFO alone (although they will all operate at the same frequency from the LFO).

So, with the 103 LFO, a multiplier, and 2 EPs you will essentially be able to control 3-6 (or more) parameters with your 2 feet and the LFO. You can't use TS cables and the EPs at the same time. Several people have said that regular TRS cables work fine so hopefully that is all you need.

Amos told me that to use EPs with MFs and patch cables, TRS cables with the ring connector snipped is the way to go. The reason for this is that regular TS cables will short out the jacks so EPs won't work, but the modified TRS cables will.

You can use more than 2 EPs, but you'll have to have quick feet to switch pedals.

Should I just use all Trs cables just to be safe. Or are they just for certain things. I have always just bought averae patch cables(not sure what they are) and am slightly unfamiliar with the difference between ts and trs.

I'd say yes. I use TS cables and hook the EPs into the red jacks (like the LFO) on my 251 if I want to send the signal to a MF. That solves it for me. Several experienced people on this forum use regular TRS cables. Neither one will damage anything so don't worry about that. It depends on what your setup is going to be in the end. If you go to the Squarewave sight you can look at the picture of my setup and you'll see 2 EPs jacked into the 251.

Forgot about the TRS/TS part. TRS has a Tip, Ring, Sleeve 3 connection plug (has 2 bands on the tip like a set of headphones does) and the TS cables are Tip and Sleeve only (like a guitar cable). I'm no EE like MC so I can't get into the technical aspects.

I was real surprised at how much these things cost! For what they do (act as a volume pedal) is seems like there would be a much cheaper option than buying an MF and then throwing down money for another pedal or two or three. Would a volume pedal work the same way, maybe with a little tweaking?

I use 2 expression pedals with my mf-103. I tried a few, and think the yamaha fc-7 has a good price compared to quality (I payed 66€ for one). btw, I never tried the moog-ep1, it wasn´t available. The fc-7 is metal with rubber, looks very durable. The range is very wide, so you can actually -play- with this pedal, not just have a little fun.

You can also use a volume pedal as an expr. pedal with the mooger foogers.
I tried my ernie ball volume pedal using a y-cable (1 mono end -> input, 1 mono end -> output, stero end -> expr. in on the mf) and it works.
but I didn´t like to use it that way, because it´s not linear, which is good for volume but not to play with another parameter.
I read in another post (was it a different forum even?) that the fc-7 is not linear, but this is not true, it´s perfectly linear.

I'm just gonna buy two for each pedal. They may be a bit pricey for what they do but I checked em out and I think if treated normally they should last a long time anyway.
