Think that these are the final LP specs?

Post by thewaag » Tue Mar 28, 2006 6:16 pm

I must admit that if the new Moog synth turns out to be as speced out on the Moog web site, I am a bit disappointed. AND, I think that it may be a tactical blunder.

As the guy at my favorite local music store says, "Nobody buys those things", meaning analog synthesizers, vs. the Yamakorgland models. Percentage wise, there just aren't that many analog heads out there who want to buy an analog synth. It would have made more sense (to me, anyway) to add something that would make Voyager owners want to buy the new synth as well. Why buy an LP, if you have a Voyager?? Do you think that that many people were waiting for a cheaper Moog?

Which makes me ask..... At the bottom of their specs on the new synth, Moog clearly states that specifications are subject to change. This is a common disclaimer, but it seems kind of funny to put this in a pre release, rumor control information piece. Which makes me wonder....

Think that there may be something that they aren't telling us? Are they waiting to surprise us with something? Do you think that the spec that is subject to change just might be something like a sequencer?????

Just wonderin'......
Thanks Bob!!

I like the specs and look at the “LP” as another sonic source that will complement the Voyager :). Used along with the Voyagers, or any other synth, it will give you two more osc’s. Sure adding the additional features some would like to see would be cool but would also add to the cost.

I’m looking forward to adding one to go along with my Voyagers , Model D other synths and MoogerFoogers.

Hmm. The specs are very healthy for the new Moog synth. And the biggest "spec" item of all is that it's actual analog Moog sound, you know, real VCOs with a genuine Moog filter. Every VA tries to nail the sound but falls somehwere short.

There are a TON of people who want a new, less-expensive Moog synth. We just can't afford $3,000 for a voyager, or just slightly less for a Model D minimoog - and forget any modular systems, those are massively expensive.

eBay is full of people bidding on Prodigy, Source, Micromoog, multimoog, Liberation, et cetera, all cheaper alternatives to a Mini. But do you think there's anyone who'd want a Prodigy over a Minimoog?

The market is there. If this thing is around $1,000 they will sell like crazy. With 2 VCOs and a dedicated LFO, this is going to be the closest you can get to a Minimoog without haiving to be, well, rich.

Not to start a class war, but I make $12 an hour - and I NEED a Moog in my life. My options were pretty grim until the new Synth rumors began.

The type of people who can afford to drop 3k on a Voyager and let the thing gather dust make me want to puke acid.

It actually makes good business sense... but not as a tactic to sell to Voyager owners. They already HAVE the money of the Voyager owners... the money they don't have is the money of those who cannot or will not afford Voyagers. There are a lot of people out there who might be able to swing something a little less expensive than a Voyager... and those are people Moog currently has not received money from. By providing a less-expensive model, they increase their "Moog Demographic," allowing a different group of people to give them money.
i hope I don't sound too cynical, I mean this in a positive way.
It's a little sad that the people with the most money get a "Voyager," but the people with less money get a "Little Phatty." ; ) (Maybe if I make this into a class struggle, they'll reconsider the name hee hee)

As for me... I probably won't buy a LP or a Voyager... I'm firmly ensconced in the Minimoog camp. I might buy a second Minimoog, though. : )

Well on the bottom of the page it says specs subject to change w/ot notice. Perhaps they are saving some features until the end to make it more interesting. Use that as the "ohhhhhhhh.... I get it",...nice" factor....Or perhaps this is it and all we need to do is just look at the physical design. http://www.moogmusic.com/news.php

I don't know something is not right......I think they are holding back some info, doesn't make sense to spill out all the info and leave nothing to show for such an anticipated event...maybe I am hoping for more...but you never know.........The responses have been somewhat negative in some forums so I think that may have been their intention to get everyone fired up and then give a chill pill at the unveiling....
