just had a thought, it has a gate in so you could use a footswitch to open the envelope if all else fails, if you can't use the ext gate in and the keyboard gate at the same time then it must have a way to select between them and that means you can probably leave it on as well.

maybe they thought that the way you select this on the voyager (with a switch) might be hard for guitarists who are playing guitar and keys at the same time, you choose either keyboard or on/ext gate.

there must be some way round it anyway, thing i'm worried about though is the apperent lack of a level control for the input, maybe they just forgot to put it on the spec or there's a little knob next to the input?
