Midi Gate to trigger external audio signal?

Looking for the real clever people here.

I know I can put an external audio signal into the Sub 37 and play it through the filters, but I'd really like to use the envelopes and i need something to trigger them.

I know I could get something like a Doepfer A119 and generate a bonafide gate signal, but I have another trick up my sleeve. I have a Sonuus G2M audio to Midi converter (which works really well at driving pure Moog sounds from a guitar) and I wondered if that might give me an option. It sends a Note On signal (with velocity) so I'm sure that would be appropriate for a Gate signal, if it can be used by the Sub 37.

Am I barking up a blind alley of mixed metaphors here?
