Sub 37 and Minitaur or just Sub 37?

Post by H_M_D » Wed Sep 28, 2016 7:33 am

Hello everyone!

I currently have the Minitaur and a large amount of lust towards the Sub 37. Before I decide on exactly what to do in this situation I have a few questions.

1. What will the polychaining feature be like between the two machines?

2. Would the Minitaur fall out of favour because of the high amount of modulation and hands on tweaking available on the Sub 37?

3. What are the differences between the quality of the components used and if so how does this effect the output?

4. Are there any differences in sound quality?

5. Has anybody been in my situation? Does anybody own both?

6. In a bass fight... Who wins?

7. Should I consider a Voyager (think the Model D will be financially out of reach) or any other synth instead?

If there is something else of importance then please add it to your reply. Also, I guess it's important to know what type of sound I'm gunning for. I'm interested in a lot of sci-if sound creation. If you'd like to hear anything then pop onto soundcloud.com/hismostdarxxxellent
Thanks

1. You can tell the Minitaur to play the third or the second voice, however I don't think of a scenario where it would work. Both have very different colors, besides the Minitaur only goes up to C5...

2. The Minitaur is a one trick pony so yes. However there are several new features coming in a new version, and it can benefit greatly from the arpeggiator on the Sub 37

3. I think both have the same quality, it's Moog not Korg

4. I don't think so

5. I own both and each has a different application, of course the Sub 37 can do much more

6. Minitaur, hands down

7. Voyager is a completely different beast from the rest, mainly because of the third oscillator which can be used for FM, the variable waveshape of the oscillators, hard sync and the CV I/O. If you get one, try to get the VX-351 and the CP-251 so you can truly play with all of its features

I agree the Voyager is a different beast, but the Sub 37 has variable waveshape oscillators, hard sync and CV (in only) as well.

Thank you very very much for your detailed response. I truly appreciate. I have been busy hence the lateness of my reply.

I went to shop and played it for about half an hour. It is so beautiful.

Great point. I was curious about the colouration. I'm sure the arp will be good but I have an Octatrack that I sequence all my gear from.

Well, it looks like I'll be keeping both. I was thinking of selling it to fund the Sub 37 purchase but I just can't let that little Minitaur go. Not ever. If it does really fall out of favour then I can simply sell it then.

The Voyager is an idea but there's just something about this Sub 37 that felt right straight away.
