That's exactly what I was thinking.. The layout is very similar to a Minimoog D.nicholas d. kent wrote:That's one of the more Minimoog like Soviet synths, though I've not played one to see how close it comes. Some but not all Soviet synths copied the Moog filter. I have played an East German Vermona that contained a Moog clone filter and the Aelita, which is quite a bit different from Moogs in details but the filter is quite Moog-like. The Polivoks though has a very original filter design.
Soviet Synth on Ebay
Here´s a little demo I made when the Altair came in. No processing, no drum samples, just the pure synth.

And here´s something I made using the Altair VCOs plugged into the Voyager
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUDP2Iv1aDc
all drums are drum samples
the synth line in the beginning uses all three voyager VCOs + all three Altair VCOs. All other synth sounds use only Altair VCOs. I think the sound is much phatter without the Voyager VCOs
The sounds are processed. The mix could be better (unthreatened room etc.) but at the club everybody likes to dance to this one

I had a polivoks for a while. I finally decided to sell it because I'm not aware of one person in the states who can work on them and that was too much of a liability for me. I did love the sound which ranged from a big round mellow 70's discrete sound to the aggro sounds it is mroe well known for.
WHile I did enjoy the sound and obviously they are an exotic novelty, with few or no techs willing to work on them and an expensive price tag for what is known to be a flakey synth, I think buying one is risky and you might end up with an expensive paperweight.

...You know, this thing looks like a cross between a Crumar DSII and a MiniMoog. I've owned both, and...
OMG - You don't think...
I was in Russia at the time... it was a cold and lonely night. I felt sorry for my poor synths, they'd had such a work out... I took them out of their flight cases and left them in the room ALONE... TOGETHER, for about an hour... I returned to find them playing silly sounds and each one smoking a cigarette.
At the time, I didn't suspect a thing... but now - after all this time!!!
I'd really love to do a circuit test on this guy just to be sure...

Re: Soviet Synth on Ebay
There are clearly some samples playing there, as demonstrated by the "Jan Hammer" artifact effect on the hi hat caused by repeating the same sample of it rapidly. They might samples of this Altair, however.
Good luck on selling it.
