Sub 38 - Sequencer - send rest via midi ?

Post by josepi90 » Wed Oct 21, 2015 6:48 am

Hi,

Hope someone can help. Im have a lot of fun with the sub 37 sequencer, but would love to be able to transfer existing sequences i have made in midi, into the sequencer. The notes are recognised when recording a sequence from Live via the sub37s midi input, but without any rests in the sequence.

Is this possible ? Checked manuals and searched but could not find any mention of this.

thanks
joe

I time between the notes the "rest"? I am guessing that if you had a .mid file and you were sending it to another sequencer that the other sequencer would have to be set first to the same bpm. Maybe what you need is the sub 37 editor, maybe.

Itll be interesting to see what the other forum members say as its something I havnt done yet with mine.

If you're doing it via step entry mode (like the old roland SH-101 sequencer) then it's basically just taking notes in order regardless of the timing for how they're played.

I don't know if there's an easier way, but there is a bit of a kludge to getting a sequence in from an external midi source:

Create a blank sequence by holding BANK and turning the knob to REC,
Press CURSOR until it's on the second 01 in the 01/01 display
Press the up arrow to set the number of notes (inc rests) you want in your sequence
Press CURSOR again
Turn the knob to SEQ, press ON and LATCH
Press a note
turn the rate knob down low and when it's showing 01/xx press the SYNC button (so that it waits for external midi clock at the first sub 37 sequencer step)
Turn the knob to REC
play the midi sequence into the sub 37 (turn off looping on your DAW) - you'll have to figure the best way to get the timings right
Turn the knob back to SEQ

Here's simple way:

Assuming you have a monophonic .MID file...Use a DAW to artificially shorten the Note Lengths a lot.

Now play the .MID file SLOWLY and send the MIDI to the Sub 37 while its SEQ is in REC.

Whenever you get to a rest, simply press the REST button on the Sub 37.

By playing/recording it slowly, you'll have plenty of time to press the REST button without worrying about it overlapping with the next note.

If your original sequence has lots of TIES and TIED RESTS, you'll have to map them out on paper to help you press the REST and TIE buttons the correct number of times.
