Sub Phatty vs Mother 32
Apologies for a potential double-post...
I have a Sub Phatty that I love. I was drooling over the Mother32 videos, but am wondering if the Mother32 would give me much, sound-wise, that I don't already have with the Sub Phatty. I know the Mother32 has a nice-looking sequencer, but I am probably going to be getting a Beatstep Pro, so that's not a huge deal to me.
If I bought the Mother32, it would probably just be the one unit - I wouldn't be buying multiple units or hooking it up with other modular gear.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

It would serve very nicely as a third oscillator for the Sub Phatty

I might offer a different suggestion. If you are already getting a beatstep pro, I would get a minitaur instead of the Mother. They are indeed different animals, or rather, different approaches to similar sounds. The minitaur is cheaper by almost $200, has two oscillators instead of just one, and has better integration with your DAW. AND you can polychain it to your sub (once they update the subs firmware). It doesn't have all of the modularity but unless you are headed down the eurorack rabbit whole, do you really need that?
Just my advice. I bought two minitaurs and they compliment my sub37 like a dream.

Thanks, that is a good suggestion, I will check out the minitaur.

I've a Sub Phatty that use alongside a little Doepfer Dark Energy semi modular that is similar in lots of ways to the Mother minus the sequencer, one osc, small patchbay, etc. I don't have any euro gear but recently have started patching it with CV sources coming out of Ableton Live using http://www.maxforlive.com/library/devic ... z-cv-tools just out of my audio interface. It has changed the way I use the Doepfer & the sounds it can do completely and I suspect that would also be true with the Mother, so it isn't about that sequencer, but about the patchbay and how you can modulate it. If you do that it'll take the Mother a long way from the sort of sound you get out of the Phatty, though I love that too.
I'm not sure whether the Beatstep will sequence non-note cv to interface with that, it'd be pretty interesting. If the firmware on the Sub updates to match the other recent Moogs the mappable CV with that will make that patchbay on the Mother pretty useful interacting with the Sub as well.

One piece the subs are missing from the archetype of moogieness proper: full audio rate modulation. You get that with the mother and you get to take home a rare moog hi-pass filter. Sure, the old modulars and voyager have them, but, that's a hell of an access fee compared to the mother. An indispensable lagniappe? I think it is. Plus, extra envelope, extra lfo. Probably most important things?
Re: Sub Phatty vs Mother 32
True that hipass filter inclusion is a big deal in moogworld. I've been running audio rate cv lfos (from a dark energy) to the sub filter & it adds a lot of new flavour. Even with the CV inputs stuck as they are you can do a lot with the right modulation. Interested to see whether I can run triggers to the kb gate & sync the envelope retriggers to the DAW or drum machine clock.

I'd never heard of lagniappe before, thanks jgo.
