Should i buy a Voyager now ?

Hi,

I'm a house music producer and until last month my contact with synths were only by VST plugins. I live in Brazil, where pro audio equipment always cost a little fortune.

I always dreamed with a Voyager. During the last 4 years i went to USA or Europe in the vacations and always visited some shop to see a Voyager and play around with one. But the price always hold me back to buy it ; not only the high exchange rates of my local currency (nowadays more than 4x1) but also the stupid tax i would pay in the customs (50%).

So in my last vacation i repeated the same routine, went to a shop to play around with some synths. My beloved Voyager was there as always, waiting for me.

This time however i was very decided to buy my first synth, so i bought a Subphatty ; i found it very cool and the 1/3 of the price of the Voyager helped to bring it to home. But again, i let the Voyager for the next time.

I loved the SP, being playing around with it since arrived at home. A new world is opened when you enter the 'real-thing' synth field. My only complaint is the absence of a third oscillator and the 2-octave only keyboard, but i can bypass it using a midi controller.

But my happiness did not last much. The SAME day i arrived home, i saw the news about Voyager being discontinued. I had a BIG regret i did not buy the Voyager instead the Sub-Phatty : (

So all this story is just to ask you guys some advice about my dilemma.

I can buy the Voyage right now in a local distributor, but i will pay 3 times its price.

OR

My next vacation will be probably in April 2016 and if i buy it in USA, i will pay about 1,5 times its price due the customs.

BUT do you think by this time i will find it in the shops ? Because it's discontinued, my fear is never again have a chance to buy a new one...

If you have to buy one NEW and are sure you need one, then I'd suggest you do so now. Waiting will only increase the odds that the price will go up and that it will be out of stock (I think hoping to find a new Voyager still available in April 2016 is very risky). If you decide to buy one USED from eBay for example, I think you will be able to find one in good shape pretty much any time in the future, and for much less money.

Contact Sweetwater.com or even Moogmusic.com and see if they can hold one for you until next year. Maybe they can work something out if you give them a downpayment or sign some kind of contract with them. It's worth a call or email to find out.

I would get something on the used market. I just saw an XL and the seller was asking $3000. Just a few months ago, it was hard to SELL a Voyager.

One of the reasons why they didn't make the Model D is because Bob remarked that there were thousands of them on the used market. There are over 14,000 on the market. I don't think you will ever have a difficult time finding one and it's anyone's guess if they will increase in value. They certainly won't fetch what some Model D's go for.

If you want to buy one new though, I would go to NovaMusik in Milwaukee (or email them) and ASK what their prices are. They sold my Voyager select and VX351 for $2999.
OF course they MAY very well do something special for the last 600 units and you can even inquire about reserving the absolute last one.

My sales guy at Sweetwater Sound in Indiana told me there is a 60/90 day wait for a new Voyager as Moog hustles to catch up with demand. So i bought the demo they had on hand for a great price and have not regretted it at all. The point is be sure to check that your music store has one before you make the trip.
