Poly chain - worth it?

Post by MrMaps » Sat May 02, 2015 9:19 pm

Hey y'all. I've come close to trading in my slim for a Sub 37, but now that the price of the slim has dropped to $595, my dream of a poly phatty seems a lot more attainable. I'm thinking of grabbing two more of them, with hopes of a 4th (LP w/ CV outs??) down the line. But, is it worth it? I know that the sound is what I'm looking for, but I've heard some things about dropped notes and a few unexpected MIDI troubles, and was hoping to get a larger pool of opinions.

You have to realize that DUO MODE(Paraphonic) for the Sub 37 is not implemented in any of the Poly Chain set-up in so far as the Sub 37 alone in Duo Mode gives you the ability to play 2 pitches simultaneously.. and when you add a second Moog you are still at only 2 pitches MAX with the second.... and THEN 3 pitches only when you add a third Moog, which was very disappointing for me. You will also be able to only control most but not all of the settings of a Slim or Little P with the Sub 37 controls. I have had the Slim Phatty get stuck notes like a Latched On almost every single time I have used it whether I just use a Midi Keyboard or I use Poly Chain. All of this aside it is worth it and it sounds fantastic.

"Here's how it works:

single sub 37 in duo mode:
play a single note - both oscillators play the same pitch.
hold a note and play a second note - oscillator 1 plays one pitch, oscillator 2 plays the second pitch.

now, sub 37 in duo mode + slim phatty:
play a single note - both sub 37 oscillators play the same pitch.
hold a note and play a second note - sub 37 oscillator 1 plays the first pitch; sub 37 oscillator 2 and the Slim Phatty play the second pitch.
note allocation is round-robin, so it can happen that the Slim Phatty plays the first note... then the Sub 37 plays the second note... and you can in fact hold a third key and change the pitch of sub37 oscillator 2 while still holding an interval on the slim phatty and sub 37 oscillator 1...

this means you can get a triad happening and move the harmonies of three notes around, even though you only get two fully-articulated voices (which is the correct number to expect from two analog mono synths).

There probably is a better implementation to be thought of, but it's trickier than you might think at first, because of the way that duo mode is not really the same as starting with two independent voices"

My setup right now has the Slim Phatty connected to an 88-key controller, with the Sub37 sitting above it on the stand (no poly-chain). With the Sub37 in Duo mode and the Slim playing the left-hand/low notes, I am getting enough harmonic flexibility to make music, three-notes.

Don't really know why, but the whole idea of a poly analog just doesn't excite me. Probably because VH's 1984 was my first concert and the 'Jump' sound pretty much ruined poly-analog for me right then and there. j/k! :D
