Complement to Sub 37

Post by abmusic » Sun Mar 15, 2015 9:05 pm

Hi!

I've recently been trying to integrate more hardware into my rig and the main synth I'm using right now is a Sub 37.

Have been doing a lot of research and have some ideas of possibilities but am curious what other users might think: what could complement a Sub 37's sound?

Disclaimer: I know each synth out there has it's own special mojo/sound so my line of reasoning is less about what sounds better and more about what will challenge me and create the most interesting sounds with a mix of sub 37, soft synths, orchestral samples, etc...

Background: I work exclusively in sequencing/composing via DAW (Cubase) for film/TV and want to build a hardware collection for the sound design possibilities, distinct tones, experimentation/happy accidents and to implement real musical instruments into my rig purely for better working environment. I need some kind of break from the endless software tweaking. A lot of people I work for and with are guitarists so as a jazz pianist/keyboardist, I am really enjoying the idea of having real analog kit to add to my works as well (especially with orchestral samples and real recordings). I have a solid subtractive synthesis understanding and have used most soft synths on the market so this would not be for random experimentation or preset hopping, either. Basses, leads, and percussive sounds are all candidates to be created and implemented...even pad like textures via multitracking.

Some ideas below and would love some opinions! Budget is 6-$700

Minitaur - for bass that nothing else seems to be able to touch, but if the Sub 37 cover a lot of this then it might be overkill to get it so soon.

Slim Phatty - Polychain and more/different Moog sounds

Moogerfoogers - rather than just decide on a new synth, use these to augment the S37 and push it further

Non Moog options (just to widen the discussion :) ):

Boomstar (ARP 2600 filter)...the sounds on this are really raw and I like the idea of having a filter from the 2600 at my disposal.

Waldorf Blofeld (for entirely different kind of synthesis...someone suggested this and makes a lot of sense but I feel like soft synths will cover this)

Pittsburgh System 10.1+ - Modular fascinates me and this looks like a great entry point that can be functional even if the patching isn't extensive at first...

Bass Station II - bang for buck and could both play with and against the sounds from the Sub 37. Just felt flexible to me and sounded malleable.

Mono Lacet - Desktop like minitaur and from what I've read can do huge sounds.

Thanks so much! Getting into the world of hardware has been a blast and the potential for sound creation with my Moog is infinitely exciting.

I just got a Waldorf Streichfett and have been enjoying it's unique sound and editing possibilities. Dave Smith Instruments also has a couple of options in your price range that you may want to consider. Also, the Arturia Mini and Microbrutes are out there as well. Lots of possibilities - have fun with the research!
