MF-104m will not turn on

Post by djchilxxn » Sat Jan 03, 2015 7:43 pm

Hello,
I purchased a brand new MF-104m Delay exactly one year ago, and have used it, but not too extensively, throughout the year. I just went on vacation, and plugged in the pedal and am getting no AC!! I do not want to believe that the power supply broke after 1 year of infrequent use, but I am assuming that is what it is because it better not be the fooger itself!

Has anybody else had an issue with the power supply dying?

I have tried multiple wall sockets, and other devices are powering up fine, so the problem must be with the power supply (hopefully) or the unit itself (oh god no). I don't have any 9v lying around with a positive tip and I don't feel like flipping the polarity of one of my boss adaptors - i'd rather just get another power supply if I have to.

This sucks? $700 delay pedal should NOT break after one year. I used to be an audiovisual technician and take immaculate care of my gear, the break is definitely not from abuse.

I just want to throw this question out there before I run across town and replace the power supply. I can't believe moog would send a cheap-o power supply, but here I am.

thanks, sorry for rambling, but i'm quite distressed right now!

Re: MF-104m will not turn on OVERCRANKING?

Post by djchilxxn » Wed Jan 07, 2015 6:17 pm

Hello,
After waiting on the edge of my seat for a few days and hearing nothing, I ripped apart my MicroKorg power supply and switched the polarity, the MF-104m works! However I am now running it at 600 mA instead of 400 mA. I tried to search to see if this would have any negative repercussions and couldn't find anything. I've overcranked plenty of pieces of gear before, but never anything that cost over 600 dollars.

Just wanted to see if anyone has any opinions on this matter, thanks!

No, you're not. 8)

The fact is that 600 ma is the maximum current that the power supply could feed. It will then be fine with anything that will draw 0 to 600 ma.
Your MF-104 will then be happy with it. Just make SURE that the VOLTAGE of your power supply your using is within the acceptable range for the MF-104, (9v DC to 12v DC is a safe range). You will then want to use a 9 VDC power supply. Note that most DC power supply will actually produce a higher voltage (up to 12V). The Moogerfooger are somewhat tolerant to that because they have a voltage regulator inboard that will accept 9 to 12 volts without problem. I would avoid using a 12V power supply because it could produce up to 15v DC, which may eventually overheat the voltage regulator. YMMV.

You may also whis to read the FAQ about that on the Moog website:

http://www.moogmusic.com/support/moogerfooger%C2%AE-faq

Just scroll down to: "What kind of power adapter can I use with my Moogerfoogers?"

Thank you!

I am going to call Moog in NC tomorrow and see if power supplies are covered under warranty (even though i cut the tip off :P ) otherwise I will replace the moog brand supply when I can, and continue to use my 600mA korg supply until then.

thanks!
