Sub Phatty Editor problems with Apogee Duet for iPad/iOS!!!

I'm having a bit of a problem. I just purchased the new Apogee Duet for iPad/iOS and it is a USB interface. One of the selling points was the fact that the Duet has a USB port on the back of it so you can connect your midi controller to it (thus freeing up a port on my Mid 2012 Macbook Retina which only has two usb ports....quite stupidly designed)

I'm having an issue with the Sub Phatty Editor not responding to MIDI changes. It says that the firmware is DISCONNECTED in the Editor's preferences tab.... but it graphically responds to knob changes that I make on the actual synthesizer. It responds to everything I do on the Sub Phatty in correlation with the DAW itself as well.. It just won't let me change my patches or load any presets. Very weird.

I would connect the Sub Phatty directly (via USB MIDI) to the laptop itself but when I do, I'm getting a low but clearly audible whining, machine-like fuzzy feedback noise when I arm a track for recording. Why is this happening to me????
