Dropped Notes in PolyChain--Any Workarounds?
Dropped Notes in PolyChain--Any Workarounds?
I am finding my Little Phatty with 2 Slim Phattys setup to be absolutely useless as a polychain, owing to the constant dropping of notes. Does anyone know of a way to workaround this? The only reason I even bought the stupid slims was to have this capability, but it's pointless the way it is. I don't need three separate phattys! I can only get polyphonic with those if I send three separate MIDI files on separate channels, which excludes any live performance.
Re: Dropped Notes in PolyChain--Any Workarounds?
The Phatty poly-chain has it's quirks, no doubt.
The beta firmware is supposed to address several related issues (I haven't tried it out yet to verify), but until the new official release is ready (probably well after NAMM, given the new Moog gear announcements), there are some things you might want to check out:
* try setting up your poly-chain and performing your troubleshooting without any external MIDI devices connected-just the LP and two SP's. That should help you isolate if the problem is outside gear, or just the Phatty's.
* if you haven't done so already, request a copy of the OS v3.1 addendum for the LP/SP. It address some arp and poly-chain details that aren't covered in the manual.
* when your are syncing with external gear, keep in mind that the Phatty's, Minitaur, etc. do NOT work well with MIDI time code (MTC) as the sync signal. MIDI clock works fine, but MTC - not!
* not trying to start a flame war! but I do seem to read a lot on this forum where Mac & Ableton users seem to have frequent connectivity issues. I can't address this directly (I use Sonar X3 on a Windows PC with very few issues), but if your problems involve a Mac and Ableton, it might be worth searching the forum for those specific issues.

Until all the poly-chain reliability issues are addressed in a formal firmware release, don't discount using the Phatty's as a big layered synth. Having 6 Moog oscillators and 3 Moog filters simultaneously playing up to 3 different patches can make for some VERY cool lead & bass lines!
I'll post more when I get the chance to experiment a bit (having a coffe at Starbucks at the moment...)
