MF 102/103 losing faith--far out there ?
Hi, I have owned a MF 103 for several months now with the exp pedal, and I have tried and tried to get some usable cool tones and sounds--but I've had no luck--so I put it up for sale, in the meantime I bought the MF 102 which I find is more user friendly. Now, the MF 103 isn't selling? maybe its a sign to keep it.(for guitar), good choice?
Anyway, I find all the vocabulary you lot use (oscilators...) very advanced to be honest, I wish I under stood, but I'm having trouble.
I found the MF103 to be incredibly Bassy! as well as confusing--so i got an EQ. pedal to calm it down--and I've just about had it with it.
The MF 102, I"m liking it better, although I'm havin trouble controlling the filter sounds , meaning making nice sounding melodies...
I know these pedals are amazing and can do alot, I just don't know how, I've spent hours turning the nobs around and around. And then the expression pedal makes things more complex, please forgive, I"m a newby.
Please someone out there, do you have any ideas, settings, or tips that can help steer me further into the realm of figuring these out, so that later when I master them I can give back to all you whom have helped me?
regards,
J...

If you have a guitar, I would keep the phaser, as this is probably the best phaser pedal ever built and also is the better sounding than any pedal being built today and I would go as far as saying that it even sounds better/the same than the classic Mutron phasers.
I also recomend that you read the manuals, Moog has excellent user manuals for all their products, very informative.
Later!

Are you using any patch cords to connect your lfo outs to various inputs?
Run the lfo out from the 102 (switched to square wave) into the sweep of the 103. Then play through that. It will be a bit poppy but you'll hear something different than your usual phaser sweep.
Do some research to figure out what control voltages are for. I bought the all in one kit just to find out what a Moogerfooger was. Then I went back for the 251. It is great to have a pedal (for guitar or whatever) that can make its own sounds.
Moogerfoogers are components used in modular synthesis that are ready to accept any line level signal. When it comes to modular synthesis - the more modules the better.

What kind of music are you trying to make with these pedals? For example: You probably wouldn't use the Ring Modulator (102) to use on classic rock unless you were using it for tremelo. The phaser (103) is by far the most conventional sounding of the pedals. You can adjust it for a light phasing effect or you can go pretty deep with it. Primarily these pedals are used to take audio to extremes, but they can be used modestly as well.

The MF103 is a little dark for a phaser, for this try putting the sweep knob at 2 o'clock or even 9 o'clock and you'll get a brighter sound.killerlick wrote:I found the MF103 to be incredibly Bassy!
any other suggestions for a more BRIGHT, biting phaser sound would be much appreciated.
ive always found that sweep at zero gives me the brightest sound, or running a tube screamer before the mooger.

If you have a CP251, try mixing some white noise into your guitar signal (on the CP's mixer) before sending it to the 103... This should emphasize the phase sweep somewhat...
But, maybe your 103 has a defect, because mine is very powerful, and very clear/uncolored sounding. I've used several phasers over the years and agree with most people writing here that the MF103 is the best I've used... by a large margin...
I also find that the 6-stage mode can have a little more strength with some signals... I'm sure you've already experimented with that... but maybe try it out some more...
