All OSC's dead
Hello,
I was hoping someone that has access to service manuals or schematics for a Voyager would be willing to help me troubleshoot my Voyager Select. I recently moved, 1mile down the road and after finally getting my studio put back together everything works except my beloved Voyager. I carefully packed it in 6" thick bubble wrap in it's own box and carried it myself so it was gently moved. Are these things this fragile? Here is what I have tried so far and come up with. It is out of warranty. I have contacted Moog about getting it repaired or just buying a new analog board. I am waiting patiently for a reply.
No output at all really accept for a thud or click sound when hitting a key or sending MIDI data.
Tried reloading the firmware twice. No change. All MIDI appears to work just fine.
I tried loading the Init. patch. No sound from any OSC. I made sure that the filter was wide open and that the amp env. was set to short attack high sustain and a long release. No output. I changed all of the octave settings from high to low and got clicks and nothing else really. Regardless of what key is played the pitch does not change. Swept through the waveform ranges as well. Nothing.
If I change the presets quickly you can hear noise changes but I get no main sound output at all.
I tried taking the tip output from the Mix out and see if that had anything. No sound either.
If I use the Init. patch and set the noise to full and the filter wide open I get noise. I turned the OSC's off. With any single OSC on I get nothing. The filter still works and I can change the sound with the amp envelope. The LFO controls work and I can modulate the filter etc. If I try to use the source of the Mod from OSC 1,2 or 3 it has no effect on the filter at all. Key pressure and velocity work on the mod envelope as well. From the LFO I can modulate the filter etc. So that at least works.
If I plug the output from an external synth to the ext. input of the voyager I can get sound output from the headphone jack. I am testing this all by the way with headphones for ease of testing. Same result if I try the main outputs.
I opened up the back panel and checked to make sure there were not any loose connections. All ribbon cables seemed fine and the socketed chips on the analog board were not loose or backed out. I also checked for voltage at the power supply DC output and all legs are fine. I didn't see any apparent burned resistors, bulging caps etc. Everything looks fine and nothing smells burned up. If you look at the picture in the link below it looks like there is a jumper wire from one resistor to another. I don't know if this is a factory mod or fix but when searching online for pictures of the analog board I don't see this jumper. Is this jumper normal?

So from my troubleshooting I think the analog board OSC section is not happy.
I have an analog scope, meter, function generator, variable power supply, soldering tools and pretty much everything necessary to fix this thing accept a service manual and schematics. I know if you have them you can't release them or post them. I get that. But, would someone be willing to say probe here and here and if you get this or that then these are probably bad? I know troubleshooting like this is hard and can be a pain but since it affects all three OSC's then I think there is a common problem that is effecting them all. I find it very strange that all three are dead and all at the same time. Last time I used this synth, about 4 months ago everything was fine. I use this synth very little. It is in a home studio and doesn't get gigged or moved ever. I just recently moved it when moving to a new house.Other than that it lives in a climate controlled studio on a stand. I can't see how I could be more gentle on the thing.

I can confirm that this jumper wire was not present on the Voyager Electric Blue that I had for a brief period (I had taken pictures of the insides).
Maybe the analog board in your Voyager Select is a "refurbished" one, and this jumper wire is actually a broken trace repair done at the factory on this board before installation ? Or maybe this is a much later mod also done at the factory on all later analog boards ? I don't know... (both my Old School and EB were low serial numbers)
Anyway, concerning schematics, repairs, or any info about all of those, you'd better contact Andy, or anyone, at Moog Music Tech Support. Those people are dedicated to their work and very friendly and understanding... Best advice I can give you.

Just a quick technical question for Rudi: how many layers is the analog board in a Voyager ?

Thank you for your replies. I appreciate the input. At least now I know the mod is legit. I hope the techs at Moog will be kind enough to maybe point me in the right direction on the board so I could fix it myself. Since it is all 3 OSC's I think there is a common part that is causing all three to fail. Maybe a shorted cap or something. If they can't help then I will just send it in. Either way I need to work again. I'll buy a whole new board if I have to. Just stinks not being able to use it for so long and then the first free day I get in months it stops working. Go figure.

To Tech_Buzz, you're welcome. Yeah, it's a bummer when things break always at the wrong moment. It's like windshield wipers on a car, they always break when you most need them !

I would like to thank Moog tech support for all of their help. I called them up, explained my situation and with zero hassle they said send in the board and they will fix it for free. I paid for shipping of course. They were willing to go over the entire synth for me but I just sent in the analog board. Andy from Moog was awesome and turned the fix around pretty quickly. Thanks again guys. My Voyager was out of warranty by nearly a year and they still did all of this. Awesome support and a super happy customer.
