Using the Arpeggiator in Logic Pro X with my Sub Phatty

Post by radioland » Wed Nov 13, 2013 3:01 am

Hello, good people in this forum!

I`m quite new here, but I`ve been reading as a guest for more than a year. I came here as a guitar player who had a terrific time with an MF-104M and an MF-108M. But, like many others, I got roped into synthesis and synthesizers and more Moogerfoogers, and now I`m a happy owner of a Sub Phatty and a bunch of `foogers.
As I`m new to all this and new to Logic Pro X, I still struggle with some things. One question is: Is it possible to use the Arpeggiator in Logic with the Sub Phatty? In the help section it says that the Arpeggiator only works with software instruments. Is this the final "no", or is there a way around this?
I know that there are iPad-Arp-Apps, but I prefer not to use more "gadgets" than necessary.

Thanks for your help!

Welcome Radioland, and congrats for the MoogerFoogers pack you (finally) received :)

Regarding what the Logic arpeggiator can or cannot control, I'm out. However there is another thread dealing with a problem using the Sub with an external arpeggiator i-Application, controling the application with the Sub's keyboard.

Here it is.

Hi,
Set up the Sub Phatty (or any hardware MIDI synth) as a Software External Instrument. This approach allows you to treat it just like any other software instrument (e.g. access audio and MIDI fx.)
(new>software instrument. From the Instrument drop-down menu, select External Instrument.
Set MIDI destination (your sub phatty. Make sure it's correctly setup in Audio MIDI setup), MIDI channel (channel on Sub Phatty), and audio input (input to which SP is plugged.)

I haven't tried it in LPX yet, but that's how it's done in LP9.
Note: Sometimes in LP9 I wouldn't see the MIDI instrument in the MIDI destination field of the software instrument unless I first instantiated a normal External MIDI instance of the synth in question. The workaround was:
Create External MIDI instrument (Little Phatty in my case)
Create Software External Instrument.
Select LP as MIDI destination
Delete original External MIDI instrument from the mixer.

Hello,

I have been using Logic Pro X midi FX with the Sub Phatty and it works great! I found this video showing how to set it up so that you can use midi fx (arpeggiator) with the Sub Phatty, check it out! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyFGnrTqgzA

Thank you, stiiiiiiive, for your kind comments. You are always very welcoming and friendly with newbies like me, I appreciate that!

@digilog & obermud: Many thanks for your help - tried it out yesterday and it worked perfectly. Actually I had already watched the video before, but didn`t realise that the arpeggiator was amongst the modulators you can choose from...

Thanks again,
